Dr. Demento featured “I Owe a Lot to Iowa Pot,” which Samuels recorded under his own name. Samuels also wrote “The Shelter of Your Arms” for Sammy Davis, Jr.

I remember Rush playing that for Perot. Good times.

That recording should be the official song of the “woke”.
And ‘twould be much better for the world if we actually did “take them away”.

“They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!,”

Used to hear that song on Dr. Demento. I had no idea it was made all the way back in the '60s.

Only time I ever heard this on the radio was on the Demento show in the early 70’s. Then he would play Fish Heads or Please, Please Me by Will Robinson! Now it’s all on YouTube and its real, not just in your head like you thought for the last 30 or so years.

I would have been 9 at the time and completely oblivious to it. I wasn’t listening much to the radio or following the charts back then. I was aware of the Beatles and a few other acts but that was about it.

I remember playing that on the jukebox while ordering pizza. The slotcar racetrack was next door. I miss those days.

When that song was released they actually played it on the radio. I bought the 45. The b side backwards thing was pretty radical in those days.

Dr. Demento was an absolute must-listen back in the day. I even recorded a bunch of shows - at first with a portable cassette recorder next to the radio, then with an integrated cassette when I could afford a stereo system. Unfortunately most of the cassettes didn’t make it over the years - I have a few that were still playable many years ago when I started transferring my old tapes to digital files.

There used to be a place on the internet where some of the original shows were posted for free listen - need to find it again. This world could use a man like Dr. Demento again.
