Arrests made in $10M Arizona-to-California recycling fraud case

Two Arizona business owners were arrested Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation into an interstate recycling fraud scheme that saw tons of recyclables transported over state lines to be redeemed in California.

The two business owners were arrested in Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona, respectively, and will be extradited to California to face charges of recycling fraud and grand theft.

The arrests were made as part of a large ongoing investigation involving efforts to defraud Golden State residents of millions of recycling redemption credits that are meant to encourage Californians to recycle their goods.

Investigators allege that the businesses trucked thousands of pounds of recyclables to California to take advantage of the state’s California Redemption Value (CRV) program. The program allows Californians to return beverage containers to privately-owned recycling centers in exchange for $.05 to $.10 per container.

A new approach to “taking out the trash”, as in “out of state”.

This sounds like a smart move by some folks that figured out a way cash in on a good thing. I hope they don’t have to go to jail for long. California throw’s way much more money at so many other useless and idiotic things anyway.

It’s illegal to buy a Coke in Arizona on the way to California and then to redeem the recycling credit for the can in California? That seems unenforceable.

Actually, why is this illegal?
California wants recycle bottles, AZ does not. Recycling AZ bottles in CA ? What’s wrong with that?

And this is fraud, why? It’s advertised
on the bottles themselves as to their
redemption values in some states.
No where have I read a disclaimer that
states a bottles’ redemption valve is
restricted to the state in which that
product was bought.
If someone from the greenie state of
Cali throws a bottle out of the car
window in NM, a New Mexican has every
right to return Cali’s trash.
How would anyone ever know where the
heck that bottle came from?
I’ve witnessed first hand the
respect Cali’s show while traveling in
other states. Two full bags of trash
tossed out the back door of a van when
leaving the parking lot at an Indian
Casino....

How to be a Democrat. First you think of a way to make money off of people by forcing them to do something. Then you make a law that forces people to do what you want. Once you exceed the lifestyle that the money you make provides, think of another way to make even more money off of people by forcing them to do something else. Make a new law... If you’re starting to notice a pattern over the course of your life, it’s not because your waking up, it’s because it hurts.

Shouldn’t they just simply be rejoicing that there’s more recycling going on?

The fact that there’s a law against this AND that charged were filed tells me that Cali’s recycling programs are scams.

(From the same group that has no problem running ballots across state lines)

Unfortunately, your summation makes logical sense ... something that politicians and, especially, unelected bureaucrats do not possess, much less understand.
Cheers!

I read an article several years ago where a defendant went to court in a similar situation. I think they had set up a business to collect these recyclable items (in Arizona) and ship them over to California and profit on the spread.
My recollection is that the defendants lost in court. Maybe they appealed?
Anyway, it seemed like another case of the court (and jury) disregarding the actual law, and just deciding based on something else.
So, I don’t know how this one will turn out.
