Maybe not. I remember Senator Howard Baker resigning in the 1980s so he could concentrate on the 1988 presidential race, still several years away.
But by New Hampshire and Iowa in 1988, he performed so poorly, he quit soon after the race began.
He later said it was a mistake to resign from the Senate. That as Senator, he would have stayed in the news, so that he would have run a stronger campaign.
The takeaway: DeSantis might lose his luster by 2028. He has to strike while, as governor, he's in the news.
All the Republicans with any scruples hated Howard Baker after he pushed the Panama Canal treaties. On other issues he was a Casper Milquetoast and a boring speaker. He was the Jeb of his day.
