Deer Leaps Into Lion Pen At The Washington DC Zoo, And Shocker… It Did NOT Go Well
Whiskey Riff ^ | 2-14-23 | Andrew Mies

A few years back, visitors at the Washington DC National Zoo got to witness a live lion hunt, only it wasn’t some pre-planned exhibit for season pass holders…

A fawn was walking around Rock Creek Park, which surrounds the zoo, when it decided to be adventurous and check out what was behind one of the many concrete walls.

Through a tragic strike of truly awful luck, the fawn just so happened to find itself in the lion’s den…

No, not some metaphorical bad place to be, the literal lion’s den, complete with two hungry lionesses.

The crowd gathered around to watch a once in a lifetime event take place right before their eyes, and while everyone was cheering for the deer, you have to think everyone knew it didn’t have a shot.

It did actually get away for awhile, although it’s clear the lion wanted a little fun chasing this thing down. Unfortunately for the lions, handlers got them back in their cages before they were able to make the kill. Veterinarians were called to give assistance to the badly injured fawn, but they weren’t able to help it and ended up putting it down so it didn’t have to suffer anymore.

The original videos were split into pieces, part 1 and part 2 are below. [at the site]

A local reporter went to get more information the next day, which is where we learned how this story ended.

Maybe this makes me heartless, but I was rooting for the lions…

Can you imagine how happy you have to be when you see a live animal prancing around your pen after years of raw chickens? Has to be the equivalent of us seeing a filet mignon after a steady diet of fast food.

And that’d be one hell of a feeling…

Also, what kind of enclosures are they using that a baby deer can just prance its way into the pen? I’d imagine if a fawn can get over the wall, so can the lion… and I do not want to see that lion hunt.

Sounds like the deer died “suddenly” at the end.

“Can you imagine how happy you have to be when you see a live animal prancing around your pen after years of raw chickens? Has to be the equivalent of us seeing a filet mignon after a steady diet of fast food.”

LOL...that’s exactly how I felt when I read the story. What a tremendous, exciting break from a dull, monotonous life in the zoo. Real, live game! The hunt!

Then those cold, heartless zookeepers spoil all the fun. Worse, they wasted a veterinarian’s time on the deer. We are so overrun by those large rats that we could use a big pride of lions to get them under control. Of course, when the deer food supply runs out, those lions may get other ideas.

Already little pets that escape are usually never seen again because we are also overrun by coyotes, bobcats, and cougar. The bears are headed our way, too, but it may be just a bit too noisy for them. Fortunately, the moose don’t eat pets. But they are ornery and will stomp you to death. Just like the bucks during the rut. Life is brutal.

The cruel part is what the vets did.

I hope they used the venison to feed the animals instead of wasting the meat.

Just turn them lose to exercise their predation on the vermin walking the streets in DC.

“Nature can be very cruel.”

Nature is nature. It is what it is. Everything needs to eat. Some are eaters. Some are eaten. It’s great to be at the apex of the pyramid, but few get there. Fortunately, our opposable thumbs help us stay there. At least until Putin gets frisky.

I have done a little bit of missions work in Africa...

There is a MUCH different relationship and perception of the animals there than here.

Elephants? Hated. Think of how irritated you get with the rabbits and gophers in your garden. Now... extrapolate that into a 2 TON rabbit AND IT’S FAMILY chowing down on YOUR food.

Lions? Loved and hated. Loved for the tourist dollars, hated for the every now and then old male or female too sick to hunt an animal, but gets a child before it is put down.

Story is kind of the same with rhinos and hippos. Leopards though are nearly revered as amazing hunters that leave people and their animals alone... except for an occasional goat, which seems to be tolerated. I suspected that was for religious reasons.

Saw a few hunter vs hunted videos this morning, very entertaining. The meal gets away more often than not.

Nope. It died in the Zoo's clinic.

Bet the lions were confused about how good it felt to have something live to play with, though.

Kinda like death by copper? Did this deer actually recognize what kind of ‘Ell hole it lived in and decided this way to die was better than road kill?

Transspecieism usually doesn't end well.

More diversity training is required.
