That is correct
It ceased being a suburb in the 60s
I lived in Buckhead in 1995-96. I had a very large one-bedroom apartment just off Pharr Road, not far from Atlanta Fish Market (that’s a high end restaurant for you non-Atlantans). It had a small laundry room, nice sized kitchen and a walk-in closet in the bedroom. It rented for $600 per month, which included cable tv, water and sewage.
The ‘urban’ crowd hadn’t moved in yet. It was a still a safe area for the younger crowd to party, and for oldsters like me to find good food and to have a pint or two.
“According to Bloomberg, Buckhead’s secession would take one-fifth of Atlanta’s population and an estimated 38% of its tax revenue. It could also impact the city’s credit rating, plus that of smaller cities throughout the state.”
THIS is why there is opposition. Only 1/5 of the residents would be lost - not that important - but 38% of the revenue, now THAT’S important.
The legislation would allow the new city to buy the city-owned assets in the area — including parks, public schools, and sewer lines — on the cheap, based on the idea that Buckhead residents have already paid for them through taxes.
DITTO—I lived there once and it is at the northern heart of Atlanta. Not close to suburb status.
BTW, Kemp will never sign a bill allowing for a vote for Buckhead to be its own city.
Seceding is a band aide that doesn’t remotely treat the underlying symptoms. There is a fundamental lack of seriousness in government about addressing problems. A fundamental failure to make hard decisions. Secession isn’t going to cure that.
What are the demographics of Buckhead?
A historical regret in this area (not Buckhead, but more north) is the northern part of Fulton county, used to be Milton county, but because of dire financials, merged with Fulton - Fulton county has most of Atlanta. Oh how they regret that day. Same financial situation forced Texas to want to be a part of the US. To be able to go back and have a do-over.
They’ve already been pretending for decades that they’re separate from Atlanta.
A suburb is simply an outlying part of the city, so it is part of the city.
Biden’s new housing rules will fully dilute cracker areas like Buckhead...
Buckhead, within 5 years, will be just another Atlanta ghetto...
