Perhaps it is time to shoot one down and see what it is and who it came from. We have already established we can shoot down unidentified aircraft in our space so why not? In all these stories I have read, I've never read that we attempted to bring one down until the balloon fiasco.
Should not be hard to being one down or at least try.

It depends what you mean by “we”. Foreign militaries, yes, as far back as WWII, according to folklore (probably true) relayed from the families of the deceased foreign pilots who encountered some sort of retaliatory action.
