A man in his 80s died after he was savagely mauled by three dogs including several pitbulls in the west side of San Antonio on Friday afternoon.
Firefighters arrived just after 1:45pm to what has been described as a 'horrific' scene where the man was being dragged by the vicious animals as emergency services go to the scene.
The firefighters were forced to intervene using their pickaxes in order to get the dogs and release their grip.
Two other people including an elderly woman were also hurt during the attack with one bit on the hand.
'As they rounded the corner they could see a man being dragged by a dog. He was completely bloodied before they got out of the truck,' San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said at the scene.
'This is not something that is normal for us. We don't normally have to defend patients from animals or ourselves. The firefighters in this instance were very heroic fighting off these pit bulls with pickaxes and pipes to try and get to the patients,' Hood said.
'Two people were mauled with a confirmed fatality who was treated and given blood on the scene, together with a female in critical condition. Another individual was bitten on the hand and also taken to the hospital.
'It has been a horrific scene and horrific experience for everyone involved including firefighters which was essentially a rescue to save themselves,' Hood said.

I knew of a guy a few years ago that had to defend himself against a pitbull attack by beating the 💩 out of the dog with a ball peen hammer. Left the dog with brain damage but that dog finally let go.
There is this crazy thing called a gun. If only more people would regularly carry then instead of hammers.
Having fought off one of these beasts I get what those firefighters went through.
A pack of three of them is probably twenty times worse than a single beast.
I live in a neighborhood that has quite a few dogs and some of them have been aggressive. I carry a heavy wooden walking stick that I have used twice to fend off attacks, one against me and one attack on my Black Lab.
I also let those owners know that next time I will shoot. Those particular dogs are no longer a problem.
No one could lend the firemen a shotgun?
All could be pitbulls. That would be three pitbulls.
Two could be pitbulls.
Or, one could be a pitbull.
This is the exact reason why George Zimmerman, the White Hispanic, was packing the heat Saint Trayvon fatefully discovered by chance while pounding the former into oblivion on the corner of a patch of sidewalk concrete.
He’d had a life-threatening encounter with a pit bull already and was determined to to protect himself more effectively in the event it happened again.
Schrodinger’s pitbull.
” ...I carry a heavy wooden walking stick ...”
Here’s some advice: beat the attacker (2 or 4 leggged) with the stick with your non-dominant hand while you are unholstering your weapon whose caliber starts with .44 or ends in magnum.
Others here might suggest a simpler plan.
In any case, keep yourself and Mr. Blackie safe.
Great reason for concealed carry…
Well, that's good to know. :-)
About 25 yrs ago this area had a problem with dog packs. After being fed up with livestock losses the pack ended up with lead poisoning.
This is a poorly written article. “Several” is more than two but not many. As written it is hard to know how many pit bulls and how even how many people was confusing. Don’t know where they get these people.
Methinks another AI generated article. This is getting ridiculous there are more than enough people who can write but our politics are wrong.
I just read my reply.
Gilda Radner says “Never mind.”
Geez.
Two could be pitbulls.
Or, one could be a pitbull.
I'll see your two pitbulls and raise you one chihuahua..
