Near-crash at Hollywood Burbank [CA] Airport prompts FAA investigation; latest in string of such incidents

At Hollywood Burbank Airport at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, a Mesa Airlines flight had to abort a landing attempt while just over a mile from the runway after a SkyWest Airlines flight was given permission to take off at the same time, NBC News reports.

The pilot of the Mesa Bombardier CRJ900 was able to pull out of the landing attempt, and air traffic control directed the aircraft out of the path of the SkyWest Embraer E175, which departed the airport without any issues.

The takeoff “prompted an automated alert to sound on the flight deck of the Mesa aircraft,” NBC reported.

Ig et that you see a connection. It's a knee-jerk thing for way too many people here.

You're ok with believing this:

(check your homepage)

But you question DIE hiring in the airline industry when they've been clear as to what they're doing??

Got it.

You probably still have to walk up the steps. That place is frozen in time.

May as well skynet control the airports. It may or may not have gone self-aware yet, but at least it doesn’t have THC in it’s system.

THC? Total Human Control?

We had to diversify the air traffic control system for equity.

Just a guess. Either ATC screwed up or the departing pilots diddled around after receiving the take off clearance. I am voting for the former since BUR isn’t that busy of an airport. I watched some live action at Gatwick(London) the other day. They were using one runway for arrivals and departures. It was non stop action. As soon as a jet landed, a departing jet would start the take off roll as soon as the arriving jet exited the runway.

Over a mile out? That’s not a near collision.

My dad is in a top-row crypt at the cemetery very close to that airport. He always loved to fly, glad these stupid pilots didn’t crash into him.

Over a mile out? That’s not a near collision.

Let's see, 140 kt final approach speed (161 mph) closing in on an aircraft entering the landing zone. Or, 1.3 miles in 30 seconds. Having worked commercial flights in an FAA Tower, I know that it takes at least 30 seconds for an Embraer E175 to
enter into position for take off. Then the E175 will 'spool up' for departure prior to take off roll.

So now, the arrival crashes into the departure, killing all aboard.

The controller (affirmative action/equity hire) had a serious lapse in judgement and the arrival (no DEI hire yet) did the right thing.

Retired USAF air traffic controller here. Not sure why the arriving aircraft aborted his landing. The separation between these two aircraft is that the departing aircraft must be 6000 feet down the runway and airborne before the arriving aircraft crosses the runway threshold (FAAH 7110.65, paragraph 3-10-3, a, 2(c). The article is not very clear but just because the departure was cleared for takeoff when the arrival was 1 mile from the runway does not violate separation standards.
