It was also a cheap and easily obtained lubricant for Civil War era "cap-and-ball" revolvers that supposedly cut down the likelihood of having a chain fire. I used it now and then back when I fooled with such things, but the stuff would get so runny with any heat that I turned to purpose-made products.
Between Crisco migrating all over and the black powder fouling, an afternoon with the percussion revolvers was messy and a bit odoriferous.
Well, OK. The reason you like Crisco to keep your skillet clean is the same reason the German Navy liked it for their sub diesels. I’m pretty sure the Kraut submariners didn’t eat the stuff either but it does work to grease a pan with. And the liquid kind gets used to French fry spuds.
I used crisco to grease the pokey thing on my Champion juicer when putting on the grinder/cutter object. Other than that, never used in my life. It is a “non-food item”.
