“Heavily involved” assumes US forces and aircraft actively engaged in combat in Ukraine against the Russians. I know of no one who wants to see that.
We are doing what the USSR did in Korea in the 1950s and Vietnam in the 1950s, ‘60s, and 70s: Arm one of the combatants. Back then they armed their player against us; today, we arm our player against them. Proxy war. I am amused at those here on FR who collapse into high dudgeon over it; because it is how the game is played; it is how the game has ALWAYS been played.
Yes, Ukraine is a proxy war. Our stated objective has been regime change in Russia and a war of attrition to weaken the Russian military. We helped take down the Russians in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, it led to the formation of AQ and militant Islamic fundamentalism that led to 9/11 and our involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq that cost trillions of dollars and tens of thousands of American dead and wounded. The law of unintended consequences.
We lost in Vietnam and maintained the status quo in Korea while losing 100,000 American troops and many more wounded. The Soviets had few losses. The Chinese had massive losses in Korea. But North Korea has emerged as a nuclear power threatening our allies in the Far East.
I am amused that Biden is getting upset about China aiding Russia. Of course that is the way the game is played. China will arm Russia in its proxy war with us and NATO. They would love more direct involvement in Ukraine by NATO. The more blood and treasure invested by the US in Ukraine weakens us and our ability to prevent Chinese hegemony over Asia. The biggest winner in Ukraine is China. Let the games begin.
