Recently, the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards received praise because their nominees fulfilled the diversity criteria.
The BBC reported that performers belonging to ethnic minorities were almost 40% of acting nominees.
Back in 2016 “diversity and inclusion criteria” were introduced into the eligibility requirements for the 2019 Film Awards.
The BAFTA boasted that it was the first major awards body to initiate such steps and that it proved their “determination to take a leading role in driving a more inclusive industry.”
BAFTA worked with the BFI (British Film Institute) to introduce BFI Diversity Standards for two categories: Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.
The BAFTA’s website explained the requirements to qualify under the new nomination system:
In order to meet the standards, productions must demonstrate that they have worked to increase the representation of under-represented groups in two of the four following areas:
On-screen representation, themes, and narratives
Project leadership and creative practitioners
Industry access and opportunities
Opportunities for diversity in audience development
In other words, if a struggling British filmmaker made a great film on a shoestring budget seeking financial assistance and help from his friends, he would not be nominated, unless he satisfied the “diversity” criterion.
On the other hand, British film producers will see these criteria as a shortcut to receiving nominations. Their focus will be on satisfying the diversity criterion rather than cinematic excellence.
But despite the aggressive push by BAFTA in 2016, things didn’t quite work out — all 20 nominees turned out to be White in 2020.

Funny, my Edward Jones guy recently sent me an AMC Theaters gift card in the mail and I thought “What am I supposed to do with this???”
So maybe the only qualified or popular results were by or with White people?
Could it be that the whites were simply more talented and skilled performers (and perhaps even more personable) than the blacks?

Casino Royale in 2006. Some group decided to have a party in there. Had to stick a finger in one ear to try to hear the movie. Never again.
I was surprised when I watched “All Quiet on the Western Front” that there wasn’t the requisite gay storyline and prominent black characters. Surprised anything could be made these days without those two “crucial” elements.
The latest HBO series - “The Last of Us” sure has both, “in spades.”
I am surprised too - that movie theaters are still in business. My town has a 16-screen AMC, along with an 8-screen and another with at least 10 screens, all within walking distance of one another - I did notice that businesses are closed (except for a Chiplotle) around the 16-screen theater, which is telling.
I haven’t been to the theater since “Elvis” came out - and before that, at least two years - and my family and I were regular weekend movie-goers.
It’s the quality of the movies that are out, nothing I’m interested and no one that looks like me - so why bother.

It should win the Academy Award for Best Picture, but it probably won't, too many white guys.
I gave up on the Brits when they did a show about Anne Boelyn and the actress playing her was black -- as was the actor playing Henry VIII. These people were historical figures who have oil paintings of them in museums -- they were NOT black.

Tell me about it— The Broadway show of the Disney movie — FROZEN - set in the NORTHERN part of Europe based on a Danish fairy tale, had the Father of Elsa and Anna played by an AFRICAN AMERICAN !!
Our small-town multiplex closed down a few months ago. Meanwhile, our little hometown theater (the Bijou) in the center of town is still going strong. It’s been here for ages, locally owned, and the owners are supporters of many charities here in town.
