Fort Myers man arrested after disrespectfully consuming key lime pie

FORT MYERS, Fla. — What constitutes the perfect dessert? Is it a balance of sweetness and tartness? Is it something that reminds you of childhood?

Could it be all of the above?

While the strawberry shortcake might be the “official dessert” of Florida, there’s no denying the true king of the “sweet life” in The Sunshine State: The Key Lime Pie.

There’s a long and contested history regarding the citrus-inspired treat. Ship salvagers and Key West cooks all lay claim to the original recipe containing a filling of condensed milk, egg yolks, and key lime juice baked into a graham cracker crust until tenderly set. Whether you prefer a meringue or whipped cream topping, Key Lime Pie is a staple on the Floridian menu.

THE WAR OF PIE

That’s why one Fort Myers man went out of his way to obtain his favorite post-dinner treat for his mother’s birthday. He took the custard creation and secured it in his refrigerator, which would remain until the big day.

He even warned another person in the residence, David Powelson, to please leave his mother’s edible present unsullied in the ice box.

But Powelson, drawn to the dessert reminiscent of a cartoon character, was losing all control to a pie in waiting.

On February 15th, around 5:00 p.m., the man slipped into a daze in his recliner when something caught his eye. Powelson wasn’t just eating his prized possession but was making sure there wasn’t even a crumb left behind.

“Why didn’t you just save me one piece?” The dejected man extolled to Powelson.

Back in college the two pot-heads next door to me (one was a friend) got the munchies and finished off a box of cookies my mom had sent me.

I figured it was them (I had shared some earlier) and walked next door and said “The least you could do is save me a few.” They gave me sheepish grins and said “Sorry man.”

I spied a couple of mostly full six packs of decent beer on their floor. I just picked them both up and walked back to my room. They didn’t say a thing.

Still exchange Christmas cards with one of the guys!

As a Florida boy, I grew up with and love Key Lime Pie. I won’t be following this recipe and making one though. Publix - which I also grew up with - opened up a store near me up here in Charlotte so I can just get ‘em there.

From the web:

To the food stealers,
It has been about a month now since my brownies started disappearing randomly. Even though my name was on the tub. My husband helped my 9yo daughter bake them for me, so I hope you enjoyed them as much as I couldn’t My previous fridge notes fell on deaf ears, so I decided to take more direct action.
So I made an anonymous report to HR Something about culture of drug use and the potential liability to the company blah blah. That is why we all had to do a random drug screen yesterday.
And did I forget to mention that for the last two weeks I have been spiking the brownies with marijuana? Not much, not enough to give

The great noir-animation “Key Lime Pie.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auyXxSEpAbo

It should be noted that some years ago, the Florida legislature had a very protracted and bitter debate over whether the “state pie” should be Key Lime or Pecan. It ran for weeks and had the solemnity of a life or death struggle. Finally Key Lime pie won. As someone noted, “the debate was cutthroat, precisely because the stakes were so small.”

“MSNBC guest host Jason Johnson said Tuesday on “The ReidOut” that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) will be hurt by Florida’s “crystal meth and alligator” reputation if he runs for president.”

But what about alligators on crystal meth?

That person should have put a mild laxative into the brownies instead.

Untrue— the recipes from old Key West date from before 1900 have no meringue. My comment on Meringue should have described when it was added by the Garden Club ladies distinct from their grandma’s 50 years before that. Recipes from before 1860— zero meringue. Perhaps the “yankees” got into the mix because they held (stole) Key West during the War in the 1860’s and were real bluecoat yankees with their own massa choose its conceits.(Operation Anaconda).

If what you refer to is the absolute crap (and hilariously calling it a meringue, which it is not) of fake whipped cream on a frozen concoction- then agree with you of the idiot modern yankee origins that think it is some kind of New England thing. It isn’t. Incidentally, we have some of the really old recipes which use... sea turtle eggs, fresh laid and legally harvested back in mid 1850’s up to when they could not. Turtle eggs, very thin shells taken out of the beach sands, which would in no way last more than a few days in the heat— so.. they made pies and had plenty of the real thing—Key Limes to “cook” the eggs.

Most do not know that the richest city in the US at one time was- Key West (a major industry being “wrecking” legitimate claims and also causing wrecks on fake reefs to collect maritime salvage. Chandlery/salvage was big business in the sail age).
