Researchers find nanoparticles of a rare earth metal used in MRI contrast agents can infiltrate kidney tissue (Gadolinium)

Physicians routinely prescribe an infusion containing gadolinium to enhance MRI scans, but there is evidence that nanoparticles of the toxic rare earth metal infiltrate kidney cells, sometimes triggering severe side effects, researchers have found.

In the worst cases, gadolinium, an element that has no biologic function, can trigger nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, a painful disease that affects the skin and organs and is often fatal.

Gadolinium-based contrast agents align with an MRI scanner's powerful magnetic field, making for sharper images, but because of its toxicity, the metal must be tightly bound to chelating molecules so that it can be filtered through the kidneys and eliminated.

But the researchers have found that some gadolinium atoms can leach out of the contrast agents into the kidneys and other tissues, Wagner said.

Contrast agents containing gadolinium are used in about 50% of MRI scans, Wagner said.

The odds of developing disease appear to increase with greater exposure to the contrast agent and as gadolinium deposits build up in tissues, Wagner said. "There are people who get five doses, and then you can start detecting the gadolinium inside the brain when you do an MRI without any contrast."

It's unclear how some of the gadolinium detaches from the chelating molecules, he said.

Wagner voiced concerns about the widespread use of gadolinium-based contrast agents, suggesting that many physicians might not be aware of the risks. "Quite often, contrast is given where it's not needed—or maybe you don't even need an MRI."

An additional concern is that gadolinium seems to be finding its way into the environment. Because the MRI contrast agent is expelled through urine, it released into sewer systems, but wastewater treatment plants aren't equipped to remove it, he said.

There are many gadolinium contrast agents. Most of the time, a hospital or facility has several available. You typically can request which one you want used, if you know to ask/demand. The MRI techs, or their manager, is typically who you have to contact. Ask for their name and contact number.

There have been multiple studies done showing that ProHance, a macrocyclic agent, leaves some of the least gadolinium behind, but the studies were looking at bone and brain deposition.

Request that, or better, if possible.

I forgot to mention that a really good 3T MRI without contrast can provide nearly as good an image as some MRIs with contrast.

One to call around for is the Siemens Skyra E11C 70cm Wide Bore, which is probably the finest MRI and most enhanced, currently available.

3T is a lot of magnetic field.

I have had MRI’s where Dr said with contrast. I try to say no...but it didn’t always work. The stuff is nasty.

A 1.5T can provide a resolution of around 1 centimeter.

A good 3T can get down to nearly a millimeter, with enough channels involved.

Wow, that’s remarkable.

Energy density of 3T field is around 3.6 megajoules per cubic meter.

Do I need to unholster my semi-auto pistol in that Siemens MRI machine?

Just have “contrast is contraindicated for this patient.”

And learn to say no chance.

I’ve had my share of MRIs. I probably have had some of that. From now on, if I need one, I’ll know to ask. Thanks.

Some of you are eating it (i.e., fertilizer).

Injesting is very different han injection.

I had a friend who went into shock and almost died from being injected with this.

I would not let her get the mRna crap, and ahe got a medical waiver before the requirement. but she was fired anyway

But of course. It was just a facetious comment about what they’re proclaiming is safe to spread on food crops.

The list of everything they’re not equipped to remove is LONG.

There is some of this stuff used in contrast dye for CT scans as well. I had nausea for several hours after being injected with the dye one time and told my doctor. The next time I ate a footlong Subway before going and no problems. The third time, once again demanded of me, I told the technician that the dye rushed to my crotch area. He told me it affects people different. Now my penis has a section nearly 1 1/2 inches long and half the circumference turned to rock. You think I’ll be taking contrast dye again anytime soon. I was given and ultrasound and the technician took 10 pictures of my penis rock and 20 each of my testicles. What do you think I gleamed from that.

I also want to point out freepers have busted the story on some company intentions of using Graphene Oxide in contrast dye.

yes a very long list. all the people talking about how the water in Ohio will be safe because it is treated are delusional.

yep a drop of bleach and oxygenation will take care of everything.

A guy I worked with was covered with tattoos, nothing obvious in business attire.
A sharp guy and very knowledgeable about his ink work.

He said that some of the ink components migrate over years to the lymph nodes and liver (IIRC).

The article parallels his ink migration.
Intersting.

Sorry to hear of your suffering.

My story was far more mild. Had a week of terrible migraines, that resulted in falling dow the stairs - only the last 4-5 - and injuring my back. Rehab took a while.

I had “contraindicated” added to my medical record, but I still have to remind them at every test I’ll never be doing that again.
