"Most people don’t get “triggered” by seeing Denzel Washington in a movie about an airline pilot, but they do get “triggered” seeing a play about Alexander Hamilton that features historically white persons as black persons."

Exactly.

I’m curious.

Did the BBC have a sub-Saharan African portraying an Earl in this production?

Was he queer?

Isn’t it a fictional book? I don’t see it as historical.

I have a problem with diverse casting in historical dramas. BBC’s Father Brown has gotten that way where the little village of Kembleford now has diversity. In WWII when black American soldiers were stationed near villages, it’s been documented that the locals had never seen black people before. And the young women were fascinated. In British shows if a long time character gets dumped, you know that the replacement character will be either a female or BIPOC.

It has less to do with the color of an actor in a movie that causes this angst among people than it has with the process of injecting race or sex roles into movies where the component didn’t exist in the original, and doing so for woke reasons.

EXACTLY! I'm upset with the companies/organizations that are shoehorning this crap into TV programs/movies. I know, and you know, that's exactly what they're doing, and I resent it. It's THEIR efforts that are driving me away from TV. I hold NO ill will towards the actors. They're just looking for work.and I can only say...more power to them.

Triggered - what a joke. I guess cultural appropriation only works one way. Hypocrite.

“Isn’t it a fictional book? I don’t see it as historical“

It was written by a particular man at a particular time in a particular place about particular people. You could do a Heart of Darkness>>>Apocalypse Now sort of adaption and be fine but black Robin Hood would grate fatally for me.

They don’t just stop at putting blacks into these films. They also tend to make them smarter better or more moral than anyone else around them.

I was watching some British show set in what looked like the Arthur years. Black early twenties princess who is running the whole show and schooling her 85 year old advisors on the art of warfare. It was compelling to watch just for the schoolgirlish affectation of superior intellect on the part of the princess and the grateful smile on the face of the ancient as the wisdom of her plan finally exploded in his mind. In reality the “deep plans” this princess was dealing up is stuff the old guy would have understood way back when he was an acolyte.

When I got tired of the absolute stupidity I surfed away. But it was funny while it lasted.

The BBC version of “Robin Hood” several years ago had a black Friar Tuck (Friar Barack?)

There was a Robin Hood movie some years back with Morgan Freeman as Robin’s wise Moor advisor (never mind that North African Moors were NOT Sub-Saharan blacks)

Olivia Coleman is the postergirl for the film industry’s new mantra, “Ugly is the New Black.”

It doesn’t work. After all, if they made a film about a 19th century novel about a tribe in some part of Africa and some characters who members of the tribe were white, you’d spend the whole film wondering how they got there and the significance of their presence.

You would never be allowed to make a film with a White person as part of an African tribe. It's okay for them to do that to a story that is filled with white people; but, never the reverse. You will never see the reverse.

The only thing we can do to protest, is not give them any money -- do not view this film.

I often wonder why the black community cannot come up with stories of their own. Why do they persist in ruining our stories. I suppose the answer is in the question.
