I hated the detour from the main plot. From what I gather we will never see these characters again, so even apart from the gay subplot it did not drive the story forward in any way. There is too much stuff I want to know in the main story for them to have wasted half of an episode on this.

What's worse is that, in the game, there was an entire sequence in which the survivalist dude (hereafter referred to as poofter #1) was involved, helping Joel and Ellie get what they needed. They sacrificed that whole character just to make a gay love story, and ruined what could have been a good part of the show. Queers in Hollywood simply have no sense of balance - they simply MUST have their depravity be center stage.
