In a junior college English class I had a topic, "countries with poor voter turn-out rates". I accidentally came to the conclusion that two countries, the U.S. and Switzerland, had poor voter turnout rates, and that they shared the fact, that it had been centuries since they had been invaded. (Switzerland because it is a financial back-alley for trading with the enemy via the Bank for International Settlements, the U.S. because of its history of being dragged into war late and winning because of its strong industrial base, both now obsolete.)
A point that is "streng verboten", strictly forbidden to be discussed, is that the World Economic Forum, technically trying to supersede the Capitalist-Communist dichotomy with a new economic system called Technocracy, has the U.S. in the running-N-word crosshairs. This means, war is planned to finally bring down the U.S. But not the home of Davos.
An article that shows the temporary pivot to prepare the U.S. to face off in war with China, is titled "It’s beginning to look like the establishment will throw Zelensky under the bus to save face" - "Prepare for a radical shift in the way in which Ukraine itself is reported. We have to get beyond the idea that China will merely topple the U.S. from its once-dominant position, and that the U.S. as China's chief enemy in the world, will possibly suffer direct military damage on its soil, if not direct invasion.
China has a long-term grievance against the U.K. for its humiliation in the Opium Wars.
Look for a hint of the Chinese memory of humiliation at the hands of the U.S. Navy, in the 1966 film with Steve McQueen, Sand Pebbles.

I do believe we are ripe for war on our own lands, but not necessarily for the reasons in the OP. I stopped reading that when it said:

I’ve watched the movie, the plot took place in the 1920’s before the commies took over. There should be little grudge over that.

The Japanese discussed invading the US through Mexico with the Mexican government. The Mexicans almost went for it.
Depopulation and eradicating the concept of sovereign countries, especially ones with large economies (that would need to be taken out first), absolutely are goals of the great reset. Neocons have been unwittingly, and some unknowingly, hijacked by the WEF to further their cause.

if China nukes the US it will come from a proxy like NK Iran or Russia and they will appear blameless.

China’s military is a joke - its all parades, staged video clips, and posturing - think of it as the Russian military with better marketing.
It equipment is made by the lowest bidder using the cheapest possible materials and parts, while still able to pay the highest bribe.
Its leadership are Party toadies, only interested in personal wealth and advancement in the Party.
Its troops have low moral, poorly fed, poorly trained. Cannot even beat a handful of Indian troops, lost badly to Vietnam twice.

The Russians just signaled the U.K. that they’re ready to activate Spetznovetz deep spy-saboteurs in the U.K.
War on American soil does not have to involve clsssic land battles with ground forces. Troops are for mop up and occupation after cyberfare, missles, and drones do the heavy lifting.
Define “attack”.
Can I admit the possibility of an EMP attack or an easily-missed balloon that drops a paylod of a deadly virus while our President mumbles into his pudding cup?
Absolutely.
Cyber attack that cripples our infrastructure including financial systems that would result in near immmediate panic and collapse from within?
Of course.
An armed invasion with planes and tanks?
Not hardly.
Of course when/if these attacks ever happen we will be told by the media and politicians not to blame Islam or Russians for the deaths and destruction when a lot of Americans will want revenge and will be made to look like the bad guys
