Michael Redway - Good Morning (1973)
Out On The YouTube ^

Posted on 02/13/2023 5:06:21 PM PST by SamAdams76

Exactly 50 years ago this week (half century), a British singer named Michael Redway burst onto the American charts with a melancholy song called "Good Morning."

It should have been a bigger hit but it did spend a few weeks on the Billboard HOT 100 during that February.

This is a haunting song about a man, obviously a mama's boy, who just spent the night with a woman he hardly knows. As dawn nears, he is feeling guilty and is looking for an exit strategy.

Morning is breaking and he just wants to get out of the woman's house and back to his mom. But he can't find his shoes! The woman has evidently hid his shoes on him and he's just dying with embarrassment as it becomes sunny outside.

He makes the decision to leave the house without his shoes. What will his mother say? Well he'll tell his mom about the Chinese food with rice and how he liked the gravy.

On his way out, shoeless, the confused man looks back upon the woman and wonders "who is she?"

He is a very confused man at this point and is obviously torn between his loyalty to his mother and the temptations of woman companionship. Will he stay with his mom or venture out once again in search of a woman?

Below are the lyrics

I think the time is near
When I must disappear
I’ll say my thank you's
while you’re yawning

Now where’s my tyin' shoes?
What will I do with you
C’mon you know it’s not too funny

I’ll look inside the chair
Don’t see them anywhere
Oh goodness look
It’s getting sunny

(Chorus) Good morning, Good morning, Good morning, Good morning

I can’t go home this way
What will my mother say
I spent the evening with a lady

Oh it was very nice
The Chinese food with rice
And by the way
I liked the gravy

One thing I often say
Before I slip away
Who are you?

Sounds like it might depend on who has the best gravy.

I vaguely remember this song as I was only 10 years old when it was on the radio. But the more I listen to it today, the more of a masterpiece it seems to be.

This was obviously not the first woman this man spent the night with. His mother must have been quite dominant in his life. He always wants to run back to her after having his evening with a lady.

It's kind of sad, actually.

I think the "protagonist" in the song came back to life as this cuck...

"My wife is bisexual and nonbinary, and my daughter is transgender. My queer family helped me better understand myself and my masculinity."

I saw that thread just after I posted this.

What a strange world we live in today.

This was briefly on our playlist at KING in Seattle. It didn’t really take off. I rather liked it.

Notice virtually every one of those top 100 songs is instantly recognizable to anyone from that time. Many are iconic

One of my hobbies is checking the Billboard charts from 50 years ago today and seeing what was popular then. There are many songs from the 1973 era that still get widely played today, such as "Killing Him Softly", "Crocodile Rock" and "Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia", but I like to dig up the nuggets that might only have gotten scant airplay back then but does bring back memories for some.

One of my favorite buried treasures is "Echo Park" by Keith Barbour. It's about a man who lost his son in the Vietnam War. I was only a small boy when it came on the radio a few times but I have very vivid memories of listening to it.
