The drop unfolded just 71 seconds after United Airlines Flight UA 1722 took off from Kahului Airport in Maui bound for San Francisco on Dec. 18, according to data from Flight Radar, a flight tracking website. The dive was first reported by The Air Current.

The flight data shows the plane took off at 2:49 p.m. local time and rose to an altitude of 2,200 feet when it suddenly took a dive and dropped to 775 feet over the Pacific Ocean.

The plunge saw the plane dip at a vertical rate of nearly 8,600 feet per minute, according to the data.

The flight recovered and regained an altitude of 2,350 feet shortly after, the dive and recovery making up less than a minute...

Heh, some things are better not thought of too deeply at the immediate time…

“ Reports say the plane experience a steep ascent with high g loads.
Also, pilots went directly from flaps 20 to flaps 0 on the fully loaded plane.”

That would probably explain the “additional training”.

“We apologize for that unexpected dip. Free Cokes and Pretzels for everybody! Juice Boxes or Bacardi Rums for the adults.
You can even use your Vapes if you have them on board.
We at United Airlines care about you, and we want you to fly with us again for your next vacation!”

Maui was under flash flood warnings, high surf and gale warnings.

That would have hampered recovery efforts if the plane dropped another 775 feet.

Reports have thunderstorms in the area so microburst is a possibility.

The reports read very similar to wind shear scenarios we practice in the sim.

There’s a key part of that scene I’m not seeing here. A couple of key parts.

“The reports read very similar to wind shear scenarios we practice in the sim.”

Do you practice going flaps 20 to flaps 0 while climbing with a fully loaded plane?

If it was that soon after takeoff, probably everybody was still in seatbelts, beverage carts were secured, no one in the loo.

A pretty good scare, but one can see why they continued on their way.

Flap retraction is predicated on speeds that are marked on the speed tape. If you start retraction in the higher ranges of the flaps 20 range, are fairly light; you can accelerate through the speeds faster than the flaps can retract.

The wind shear maneuver specifically states not to change configuration.

Reminds me of an Aero Mexico flight I was on from Los Cabos.

Come time to descend, the pilot did not do the usual cut power and glide down, he just freaking nosed over and dove. Should have heard the hollering. One character shouts “Dive, dive!”

It appears that there may be more than one contributing causes.

I am not speculating, just listing some.

Slower than normal speed

Heavy aircraft

Power reduced to conserve fuel

Too steep climb angle

pilot error

weather

Are there other plausible reasons other than microburst?

Wasn’t a jetliner brought down in Denver some decades ago with a microburst?

I flew on one of those. Before that flight, I did not know that soundproofing was an extra-cost option for Boeing planes.

I don’t quite follow. As to acceleration, are you referencing an increase in power setting or no change in setting?

Sounds like a sudden downdraft. Before radar was able to spot these things several planes were lost on approach by encountering a downdraft and suddenly pancaking on the ground.

Don’t be silly. You know how much we’ve ruined the atmosphere with our greedy capitalist CO2 generation. Well, Bucko, CO2 is the heaviest gas in the atmosphere. Since our disregard for mother Earth has resulted in a 4 quadrillion ppm increase in CO2, the explanation is simple.

This was a carbon jet column of pure CO2 shooting down to the ground, because of gravity, and the plane just got in the way.

See, you capitalist dogs almost killed a planeload of innocent school children!
