A lot of cashiers have trouble with counting out the right change, even though the exact figure is right in front of them on the register.

This is due to having minimal math skills and to a big decrease in people using cash. Some don’t even know what a $50 bill looks like. I gave a $50 bill to a cashier for a $4 item and he gave me back $1! Dumbass. I got my $46 but not without insisting he look in his register.

I’ve really been noticing that a lot. I think part of it may be because so many people pay with plastic. That’s dead easy. If you pay with cash, the cashier may be thinking “Oh drat! Now I have to figure out the change. Damn!” I’ve seen people struggle to put together coins to total 83 cents. It’s hard, man.

Schools used to really drill all kinds of arithmetic — and they also taught practical skills like “counting back change”. I’m pretty sure they don’t bother with that stuff now.

You are correct. Most cashiers have no trouble swiping the card and giving you a receipt. But give them a $20 for a $7.67 bill and they’re likely to freeze up, then attempt to give you some bills and coins in the hope that it’s close. I recently gave a cashier $20.24 for a $12.24 bill. I received nine dollars and some change in return.

Yes,
I had similar problems.
Once, I did not want lot of change, so I gave the cashier like $10.27 for $6.27 bill.
She got totally confused, and eventually, the manager was needed to solve this conundrum!

This is true in my all white area with “good schools”. Cashiers can’t make change or do simple arithmatic. We had a couple teenagers helping with an event. The needed to know how many 8 inch boards made up 24 inches. They had trouble without a calculator.
Anyone who cares about their children will get them out of the public schools even in areas with “good schools”.

I gave a $50 bill for payment at a drive-thru restaurant.
The kid started waving it around and shouting..I got a 50! 50 bucks look at me woo hooo!!! Dancing and twirling around. I was nauseated. Should have just drove off. He had to call his supervisor to make the change.
And this was close to 10 years ago...
