It does sound awkward, but IMHO, not because it's incorrect, but a somewhat older, more formal usage.
Nice try, but, you're interpreting what you think the writer "meant to say", but, that's not what the writer wrote. IOW, the writer should know better and not hope that what he/she wrote sounds correct to some people.

I simply have a big enough vocabulary to understand that the word in question has multiple legitimate accepted uses and definitions, and to a person who is aware of them, the writer's intended use is clear in the context in which it was used, i.e., "to suffer a fool," like I'm doing now.
