The 2nd house I purchased after getting married was in Mira Mesa. North San Diego. The community is a very mixed white, Asian, Hispanic. Nicely balanced at the time we arrived. My sons benefited from having asian friends with high academic standards. A mix of friendship and rivalry in the academic area that was mutually beneficial. My middle son became fluent in Spanish as well. We enjoyed the Mexican, Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese restaurants along with our favorite Irish pub (Callahan's). It was a lovely place until the drug gangs moved in. Graffiti and gunshots all night. Street racing on Mira Mesa Blvd. It was time to go and we left for Idaho. No tears in selling the Mira Mesa property either.
In the years after we moved, some of my son's friends were killed in gang violence. As much as they missed the friendships, they realized the dangers we left behind.
