Stalwart conservative and three-time presidential candidate Patrick J. Buchanan has announced his retirement from writing a weekly syndicated column.

Buchanan, 84, has been a longtime Newsmax insider.

After making a national name as broadcaster and author, Buchanan ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 1992 and 1996. He became the Reform Party nominee in 2000, espousing his strong opposition to outsourcing and illegal immigration.

On television, Buchanan was a regular panelist on Sunday morning's long-running "The McLaughlin Group," and was an original host of CNN's "Crossfire."

A prolific writer, he authored 14 books including "The Death of the West," "State of Emergency," and "Suicide of a Superpower."

Buchanan began his career as a St. Louis Globe-Democrat editorial writer, advancing to assistant editorial page editor before going to work in 1965 for a New York City law firm at which then-former Vice President Richard Nixon was a partner.

Buchanan began a lengthy political career when he was hired as an adviser to Nixon before a successful 1968 presidential campaign.

*But Europe? Now that I’ve seen how they just never can get along with each other, ever, and after we’ve spent untold trillions of our tax dollars to defend them*

Any student of world history could confirm that Europe was the bloodiest continent in. world history.

“Why was it so important for him to defend John Demnjanjuk . . .”

Probably because he had reasonable doubt about Demnjanjuk's guilt, coupled with a sense of fair play in the treatment of an American citizen.

If I recalled, Demnjanjuk was convicted of war crimes based, in part, on the sworn testimony of eye witnesses that he was “Ivan the Terrible.” That conviction and death sentence was overturned by an Israeli court because it did not stand up to scrutiny on appeal.

It then occurred to German officials to charge Demnjanjuk with being an entirely different war criminal. He was convicted once again but died before his appeal on that sentence was completed.

I believe also the Soviets forged some of the evidence against him. He was basically a captured Ukrainian Red Army soldier, who was given the choice to be a guard, or to be shot. I call that 'extenuating circumstances'. Plus, the trial was basically the Germans trying to say, "See, it wasn't just us!"

There’s more. Didn’t know the news was 2 weeks old. Read a tribute in Lew Rockwell.com. Thought provoking.

The Trump years turned me around on PB. Started to respect what he had to say. There are certain things I had issues with PB, but he was spot on for the last half decade at least. Hope he enjoys his retirement.

Yes he seemed to have unfounded sympathy for Germany. Germany got off easy in my opinion.

Hitler’s Germany got off easy. Kaiser’s Germany was unfairly punished.
