A near-collision between 2 planes in Austin prompts an FAA investigation

A FedEx cargo airplane was forced to change course during an attempted landing after a Southwest Airlines plane was cleared to depart from the same runway at an airport in Austin, Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The FedEx plane was cleared to land while several miles away from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Saturday morning, according to preliminary information, the FAA said. Shortly before the FedEx aircraft was due to land, an air traffic controller cleared the Southwest flight to depart.

"The pilot of the FedEx airplane discontinued the landing and initiated a climb out," the FAA said in a statement. "The Southwest flight departed safely."

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are both investigating the near-collision.

Buy that FexEx pilot a case of his favorite, that’s some heads-up flying on approach.

Sounds like some diversity in action what could go wrong.

You need to let go of your hate. It will burn you up from the inside.

I had this happen back in the 1970s at Providence RI Airport, T.F. Greene (IIRC). We were on approach when the pilot pulled up. He came on the intercom and said he liked to have the runway all to himself when he landed, so we were going around to try again.

Same thing happened to me at the Atlanta airport years ago. But for the quick action of our pilot on the yoke and throttle we would have landed on top of another aircraft crossing our runway.

I had it happen in Honolulu - the Hawaiian Airlines L-1011 I was on had to go around maybe a mile from the runway and the first officer told the passengers that “the guy in front of us didn’t want to listen to what the controller was telling him.” It wasn’t a near miss, but from the exasperated tone I gathered it wasn’t an uncommon occurrence, either.

Nothing to worry about here as all of staff in the FAA Tower have been fully vaxxed and boosted and have completed their mandatory classes on usage of proper pronouns.

They lowered the hiring standards for inclusivity and diversity, then vaxxed them all. Go with God and your angels if you’re flying. At least one destination will be assured. It gives new meaning to pilots “timing out.”

A colleague was squashed in the similar incident at LAX 35 years ago. The big jet came down right on top of the commuter plane on the runway.

I was out and about in my motorglider just north of KCHA one day when I heard a KCHA female ATC clear a TN ANG C-130 and a C182 to land on the same runway at the same time. The next 60 seconds of radio traffic was harrowing to say the least. Never heard a word about it on the news, but apparently it was close enough that Fruit of the Loom stock went up.
