Melinda Dillion, the actress best remembered for her roles in the much-loved holiday film “A Christmas Story” and sci-fi classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” died Jan. 9, her family confirmed Friday.

Dillion began her storied career as an improvisation comedian with Chicago’s Second City comedy troupe after stepping in as an understudy for a sick Barbara Harris. She played a great mom in A Christmas Story. At 83 she had a long life and left a few pleasant memories behind for us to think about on occasions and smile.

At my age, everyone is dying. I’m not afraid of dying but I am saddened by it.

Melinda Dillion will probably live for at least another 100 years, thanks to one of the most popular Christmas movies ever. Interesting how that works out. She was in several higher profile & prestigious movies and even ‘on Broadway’, the pinnacle for many, but a small Holiday film captured the heart of so many people that it been seen annually for over a generation and will probably continue for many more

Rest in Peace, Melinda Dillion.

Yep, just was with Darren McGavin, who played a lot of great roles in his career, but he’ll always be “The Old Man”.

Her name is misspelled in the headline and throughout the article. It’s DILLON, not “Dillion.”
Anyway, she was always my favorite character in A Christmas Story. I love how she played the devoted yet exasperated wife/mother.
