It was that they would then pound on a trash can lid in the dugout so the batter would know what pitch was coming.

So...sign stealing happens. Is there a better, more honorable, way to deliver the information?

Well the “part of the game accepted” way is for guys on base to do it and flash the batter. Which means the 1st step sign stealing is getting somebody on base. When you give some ball boy a camera and a trashcan it’s a bit much. But there were a bunch of suspensions so good enough.

They were using a centerfield camera to zoom in a the catchers fingers when he would flash the sign to the pitcher.

Then they were transmitting a #1 for a fastball or #2 for another pitch using a I WATCH that the base coach was wearing. He would signal the batter.

When they got caught doing that, they switched to banging on the trash can lid to signal the batter.
