Lanny Poffo, a popular professional wrestler whose career spanned from the 1970s through the 2010s, has died. He was 68.
The cause of death has not been revealed.
“Arriving in WWE in 1985 alongside his brother, ‘Leaping’ Lanny Poffo was one of the first high-flyers in WWE,” WWE wrote on its web site. “While he achieved some success as a fan favorite reading his own poetry and throwing Frisbees to the crowd, he reached new heights as The Genius while managing Mr. Perfect [Curt Hennig]. WWE extends its condolences to Poffo’s family, friends and fans.”
Poffo was the son of professional wrestler Angelo Poffo, and the brother of WWE Hall of Famer Randy “Macho Man” Savage (real name Randy Poffo). At one point Angelo and Lanny Poffo were NWA tag-team champions together. He also competed in a tag-team with his brother in ICW, a promotion founded by their father. Savage was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his brother in 2015.
“LANNY POFFO MY BROTHER. I LOVE YOU FOREVER. GIVE NIKOLAI [VOLKOFF] RANDY AND [MISS] ELIZABETH HUG FOR ME,” tweeted the Iron Sheik, a former in-ring opponent of Poffo’s.

Man...I can’t believe “The Genius” is dead.
I pray he knew Jesus.
To my knowledge he never won a match, but was always “very capable.”
I loved how he always read those poems...before getting the crap beat out of him.
RIP.
I remember when I saw his brother in Spiderman, I couldn’t believe how juiced he was.
His head looked like it was going to explode.

RIP, check out his shoot interviews on Youtube.
More falsehoods from the corporate press. No WWE back then. It was the WWF.
I remember a lonnng time ago the one late night when I turned on the TV and wrestling was on. I almost turned it off but this very athletic looking dude was doing flips all over the place.
Pretty funny interview, but with a bad premonition:

Wow, very ironic when he says it might cost him(self) in the end...
A flaky but likable and honest guy...
RIP
I loved watching pro-wresting back in the 80s. It was great theater. Lanny would always read a poem he had composed before going into the ring.
When Leaping Lanny and Macho Man were wrestling out of Lexington, Ky., mid-south wrestling league, my Aunt made a robe for both of them, Leaping Lanny first and then later for Macho Man. She said both of them were “nice boys” when they weren’t on TV. Leaping Lanny also was an amateur singer and gave her a signed 45. She made Bridal dresses and bridesmaids dresses and somehow she was recommended by someone who had her dress made. This was sometime in the late 70’s early 80’s.
I sat next to him on a plane. One of the nicest people you could meet. He mailed my kids two of his autographed children’s books later that month. Great person. RIP.
Which is actually a real town here in Hellinois, and where he along with his brother Randy (Macho Man) grew up.
I know Downers Grove well, my long term girlfriend lives there. It's a very nice place to live.
That makes two of us. What is he now, 103 years old?
Leapin Lenny RIP
Now you have done it, He’s going to break your back, make you humble.
