The Complete Holy Bible - NIVUK Audio Bible (youtube, read by David Suchet)
youtube.com ^ | David Suchet

Posted on 01/31/2023 10:39:50 AM PST by RoosterRedux

This is a link to the Entire NIV Bible read by David Suchet (played Hercule Poirot in Poirot (TV Series 1989–2013).

I have this on Audible and listen to it every night before bed and during the night if I have trouble sleeping (which is usually every night around 2-2:30).

If you've never read the Bible from beginning to end, this is a great way to do it.

I have now read the Bible several times through and go back and reread parts that speak to me over and over again.

At youtube, there is a complete list of all videos by book, so it is easy to navigate. I have gotten friends involved and they say that it has changed their lives.

So, if interested in the Bible, check it out. It is obviously perfect for people who have vision problems.

It's the Bible for crying out loud. It's powerful and supernatural.;-)

And it's free!

Thereby showing that he is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.

Except that God the Father now seems to have a physical body, just like Jesus - the Incarnate One.

Even if perhaps you might not have meant it, thanks for the mention.

Oh, I mean it all right, as it IS Scripture to you guys.

Here, I'll mention some more:

Kolob is a star or planet described in Mormon scripture.
Reference to Kolob is found in the Book of Abraham.

"If You Could Hie to Kolob", the hymn

Kolob as the inspiration for Kobol in Battlestar Galactica

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolob

FigureJoseph Smith Explanation[52]Explanation by non-Mormon and Mormon Egyptologists (quotes are from Deveria)[25][43][53]
1Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God. First in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. The measurement according to celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit. One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth, which is called by the Egyptians Jah-oh-eh."The spirit of the four elements (according to Champollion), or rather of the four winds, or the four cardinal points; the soul of the terrestrial world. This god is always represented with four rams' heads, and his image has certainly been altered here. — They have also evidently made a very clumsy attempt at copying the double human head of the god figured above, fig. 2, instead of the four rams' heads. The word Jah-oh-eh has nothing Egyptian in it; it resembles the Hebrew word [redacted] badly transcribed." (emphasis in original) The name hieroglyph above the central figure is Chnm-Re, the Egyptian "First Creator" god who organized everything out of the primordial chaos.

I guess the world should cut Joseph some slack in the above, for this was in hieroglyphics, not the Reformed Egyptian with which he was acquainted. Perhaps the stones didn’t work as well, being needed for RE translation only.

Speaking of Reformed Egyptian, I wonder what the text actually LOOKED like??

The "Caractors" are the only tangible evidence in existence related to Smith's story.

No gold plates, no brass plates, no peep stones, no Urim and Thummim...
only these "Caractors," not a single one of which is in the purported languages.

Smith's translation of the Caractors. According to Martin Harris (Joseph Smith - History, 1:64), "I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated,* and he said they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters."

Speak right up now in all truthfulness. Isn't it revealing how Smith started out making a stab at creating believable "caractors" but quckly gave up and produced nothing but squiggles, ending up wih a series of nothing more than crude little scribbles? Yet Professor Anthon supposedly translated them!

*Harris must have had two or three pieces of paper with him—one with characters and a translation of them (on the same paper or a separate one) and one with untranslated characters—quite likely the "Caractors." Some Mormon "scholars" have gone out on a limb, sawed it off, and knocked themselves out trying to translate from these true Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic characters a segment that would correspond with a verse from 1 Nephi.

Modern-day experts in Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic. In 1829, any knowledge of these languages possessed by U.S. scholars would have been rudimentary at best. Expertise in them has vastly improved since then. So go ahead, do it. Get any modern expert in these languages to identify which of these "Caractors" are Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac and Arabic. Better still, accept the claim of Mormon apologists that Anthon did indeed so testify and that his appraisal of the Caractors was correct. (Op. cit, pp. 73-75)

Save your money! Samples of Assyriac/Aramaic and Arabic writing:

What say you? Which of Smith's "Caractors" resemble the Assyriac and Arabic ones? No need to pay experts for their analysis. A child could accurately check this out. These writing systems have remained constant for well over 3000 years.

How about some faith-building fictional stuff?

Here is one that I've not found in the above publication:

REFORMED Egyptian: The Beginning

O ne day, long ago; long before the Romans and the Greeks and the Hittites and the Philistines roamed the Earth - there was a young Egyptian boy - Yusef Shehata - who was running along the banks of the Nile one day; after escaping from the Teachers grasp.

He was so tired from having to learn to carve hieroglyphics into the student sandstone slabs everyday; working for perfection; perfection needed to be able to claim the title of Master Engraver of the Pharaoh.

"If ONLY there were an easier way!", he cried into the cobalt blue sky of the verdant valley: hundreds of miles long, but only a few thousand cubits wide.

Exhausted and exasperated, he sat on the bank; cooling his heels in the water while keeping a watchful eye for the crocs: the Gods of the Waters. Yes; being consumed by one is a sure sign of blessing; but this day young Yusef did not feel so blessed; as his only burning was of his arches: not his busom.

Later, as he had recovered some strength; he climbed high into a palm tree to procure a prized coconut - one sure to be brimming with cool, delicious milk.

Reaching out to one, he tugged on it, only to find it secure. Tugging and yanking harder, he slipped and fell onto the sand below.

As he regained consciousness, he was cursing his luck (but noticing no actual physical harm) he looked upward to find his prize HAD come loose and was now a mere arms-length away.

Evening was nigh, so he cracked open the coconut and drank his fill.

As he was preparing to leave for home (all the while devising yet another tale to explain his absence to his harried mother) two foreign visitors were suddenly by his side. They said they were a Father and Son - sent to Yusef in response to his earlier cry. They relayed a message to him to dig under the trunk of the tree to find a new system of writing: writing to reform the complicated language of the Nile, engraved on Golden Metal: the Metal of the GODS.

As in countless other days, Yusef's mother did not believe him and beat him as usual; sending him to bed without his supper of beloved camel stew: the Meal of the Peasants.

Unable to sleep; unbelieved by his family; sure to be severely punished by his Master - Yusef gathered his few belongings and fled silently in the night; down the river of his heritage and into the foreign land of the Jews - never to be heard from again...

I’ve always been curious how the LDS knows the Book of Mormon is translated correctly.

When I stayed in an airBNB that was the downstairs of a house owned by a former BYU football player, the wireless connection was named Kolob

then why is the BoM needed?

More of born again doctrine limiting the Creator. Surely you are aware of Prophets and scripture mentioned in the Bible that are not found in the Bible. Why would anyone with a thirst for truth and knowledge not beg for such to be revealed and more and more? I see no difference in the voice of the Good Shepard from whatever source He speaks.

There are those who figure the lost 116 hand written pages of the Book of Mormon at least equal what we now have in print. There are plates mentioned in the Book of Mormon that are yet to be translated. The books contained in the celestial library and the words of the lord contained in them are numberless to man.

Joseph Smith did not venture into the woods as a young boy to do anything more than enquire of God which church was right. The rest is our history. Posting from whatever LDS collection you may have at your fingertips does not equal reading, comprehending or understanding what you are posting.

I only need the translation from “reformed Egyptian”. Not sure why I would have an interest in digging deeper
especially if I have to listen to those who weren’t there attempting to denigrate the one who was. That would
just be muddying the water. If you have doctrinal issues I would be happy do discuss them. You and I should
both agree that the Christian community cannot agree doctrinally with the Bible. God is not a God of confusion
or for that matter in charge of primordial chaos.

...and speaking of primordial chaos, someone has again exceeded page parameters requiring some work to stay within the constraints of those parameters.

Faith and the belief that God was speaking directly to Joseph not based on thousands of years going through the hands of scribes, monks, historians, and multi translations from Hebrew, Greek, etc., etc.

LDS take no issue at all with the comment “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly”. I don’t believe I have ever in many many years heard anyone question specific verses based on incorrect translation. The Book of Mormon is exactly what it professes to be, “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

I got that but you don’t have the original text like we have with the Bible.

Example: There is no Joseph’s Coat of Many Colors. It is an incorrect translation. The Hebrew text just says “a long tunic”. It was probably left over from the Geneva Bible. We have the original Bible in Hebrew and Greek. You don’t have to trust a translation.

So while you may trust that Joseph Smith got it right, you have no way to verify that by comparing his translation to the original text. So you really can say “We believe the Book of Mormon to be the Another Testament of Jesus Christ as far as it was translated correctly”.

Thanks for your response. My neighbors were LDS and we spent many a Christmas Eve meal with the Elders and Sisters but I never wanted to bring it up.

Thanks for your response. My neighbors were LDS and we spent many a Christmas Eve meal with the Elders and Sisters but I never wanted to bring it up.

Thanks for the reasoned response. To the above I might be inclined to ask why? I’ve always regarded face to face conversation as the more rewarding, but maybe that’s me or you may have thought it would be disruptive being an invitee.

On the issue of original text, I tend to agree with those in Joseph’s day that the gold plates containing the original text would have been stolen had it remained in Joseph’s possession. A great deal of effort was used to make sure those plates were protected and used for translation and nothing else before being returned to the angel.

You might also remember there was included the Testimony of three witnesses. Who saw the plates and the characters on them and the voice of God declaring the translation was by the gift and power of God.

THE TESTIMONY OF THREE WITNESSES
Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.

I know that I've never heard/read that an LDS apologist even identifies any mistranslations in the KJV.

What your take on the straight Egyptian hieroglphics found in the Pearl of Great Price?

Any comments on the obvious mis-translation of the images by Joseph Smith??

An 1830 statement titled "Testimony of Three Witnesses"—one statement signed by three men rather than three separate statements—was published at the end of the first edition of the Book of Mormon:

Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, his brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seeen [sic] the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shewn unto us by the power of God, and not of man.
