I want to start listening to audiobooks on my iPhone but some say they're free.

The app is what I'm referring to, not the books.

iPhones have an embedded app. It’s called “Books”. It is an orange icon with a white open book figure inside.

I use the Libby app with with free audio book checkouts from my local library’s account.

I also use Audible - the app is free, I pay $15/mo for one credit per month plus access to the Plus catalog, which has a lot of free books.

I actually opened that app for the first time I think since I have been using the IPhone.

Definitely a lot to explore.

Most audiobooks aren’t free. There’s Amazon’s Audible for 14.95 per month and that goes to one Audiobook per month. Scribd is 13.99 per month and you can upload unlimited books. Chirpbooks is a free app and they send you daily offers of sale on books or you can choose from a huge library of books at full price.

Also check your local library for free online audiobooks. I’ve gotten many books from my library. I think the app for that is called Libby.

Thank you, so the app is free, I just need to purchase or find free books, right?

Lots of audio books available free on youtube. Anna Karenina and Hamlet’s Mill are my recent from there. I know you said iphone. I prefer to use a youtube downloader on my computer and load them onto my samsung. For iphone, download the audio onto your computer and use the playerxtreme app on iphone. Go to the network option in the app. Connect your computer and the phone to the same wifi. Then type the playerxtreme address in the app onto your computer’s browser - something like 192.168 and so on. From there you can drag and drop transfer movie and audio files wirelessly without using apple’s bs sync app.

Yes the app is free, you’ll just have to search for free books.

While the app is free, as a subscriber to the catalogue which does have some free books you pay about 15 a month for one book credit per month and you use those to get one book a month with that credit.

I am a bibliophile and buy hardback and paperback books, kindle books, nook books and also the last five years Audible books. With ear phones and head phones Audible books are good when you are exercising or stuck places where reading is not that comfortable, like on a riding lawnmower or in the car on long commutes.

Yes, Libby is great if one’s library subscribes to it. Not only is it great for audiobooks but if one has a kindle books can be download for use on a Kindle as well.

The app “Documents” is a great app. It will do most things with files for entertainment. Ebooks, video, audio books, even PDF.

I prefer CD and mp3 discs. Plenty of used ones out there and after you buy them they’re yours and nobody can pull a Winston Smith on them by pushing a button from half a world away.

Anybody use Scribd?
They’ve got Audio books.
Admittedly not as good as Audible, but they also give you access to tech docs, manuals, papers etc.

Many of the books that I like are available on Youtube. I often listen to P.G. Wodehouse or old science fiction books while driving.
