"Can it really be that complicated?"
Hey, this is a DOD procurement! If it's simple, they are guaranteed to MAKE it complicated. We're a far cry from the old days of simple...

Key word: tactical. As in needing to operate close to the front lines.
It’s a truck that has to be able to travel on dirt without getting stuck in mud, be able to button up to operate in toxic chemical/biological environment, be armored against small arms fire and shell fragments, etc

Our current trucks are pretty much worn out. PM can go only so far. Besides, combat, and therefore combat support, is significantly different than when our current trucks were designed. Just my guess.

On the bottom truck, I bet it is a pain lining up the back set in the mud.

Our current tactical trucks do. They want a new version.
I was just pointing out it wasn’t simply just a truck.

Would seem to me we slightly modernize the existing model and build new ones.

I worked on a M1075 PLS a lot for an anti IED program. It was simple in some ways and crazy complex in others. The main thing was that everything about it was huge.

And whst would be wrong with just building replacement models of current designs?
Another waste of money.
The Russian Ural truck has been around for decades and works better than just fine.
