Steely Dan “Can’t Buy a Thrill” album — Classic. Beatles had many CLASSICS. Never thought of Steely Dan in the same league as the Beatles. I was there.
Wasn’t Forrest Gump’s trip to Mao’s China the inspiration for John Lennon’s song : IMAGINE ? 🤣😀 😆
Well, you wouldn’t even know a diamond if you held it in your hand
The number of famous musicians who have named The Beatles as an influence is staggering. I honestly can't remember any famous musician naming Steely Dan as an influence, though I'm sure there are a few. And, of course, The Beatles sold many, many more records than Steely Dan did. One hundred years from now people will know who the Beatles were. That is unlikely to be the case with Steely Dan. It's okay if you prefer the music of Steely Dan, but to say they were better than The Beatles in every respect is just laughable.
“Imagine” is the atheist version of “Amazing Grace”.
Lennon was coming around by 1980 - unfortunately he got gunned down by a mentally damaged person at the Dakota.
The majority of these hippies ended up becoming yuppies during the 1980s. The era of conspicuous consumption and love of material things. Yes, the same so-called idealistic people of the 1960s would be spending the 1980s in exclusive nightclubs with $600 suits buying $10 drinks and watching their 401k's by day.
There was a movie around 1984 called "The Big Chill" which showed just how pretentious the 1960s generation became.
These are the people running our country today. Scary.
The Rutles’ version was “All You Need Is Cash”
I doubt any of the Beatles even knew who they were, and if they did they paid very little attention.
Steely Dan was a talented band, a few of their songs are on my all-time favorites list, but nowhere near Beatles level
Almost all of the Playboy Playmates in the 70’s listed Steely Dan as a favorite band. I can think of no higher recommendation.
I MIGHT make an exception of the ‘Rubber Soul’ album. I listen the that one a lot.
And Yoko was right next to him, and not one bullet....Things that make you go "hmmmmmmm".
Drinking much?
Come on, who would want to hear the screech she would let out if she was hit?
Your comment has me hypnotized.
Indeed. "Only a Lad" is definitely anti-leftist as well.
The reason bands like Steely Dan were so popular was because everyone was stoned.
As a Gen Xer born in the 70s, this was before my time. I remember it since I was the last of 6 kids, but the whole naive 1960s utopianism was before my time. The cynicism it bred when all of the leftist utopian dreams inevitably failed was what I saw.
That cynicism was healthy. We should be cynical of utopians. That’s what Millenials missed. They actually believe in Gaia Worship and global socialism’s utopian promises.
Imagine wasn’t a prayer. It was global socialism’s anthem.
