Best Movies of 2022
TGC (The Gospel Coaltion, U.S. edition) ^ | December 27, 2022 | Brett McCracken

Posted on 01/27/2023 8:32:17 PM PST by sphinx

Are movies still relevant? ... Even as Hollywood rebounds a bit at the box office (up 21 percent in 2022), critics rightly observe that innovation is suffering. Sequels, reboots, and franchises rule the day and artsy “prestige films” can’t find audiences. Part of the problem: audiences have a growing (and justifiable) sense that Hollywood is increasingly less interested in entertaining them than in force-feeding them progressive ideals.

As I put together my list, I focused on films that didn’t pit entertainment against artistry or confuse the difference between having something to say and telling audiences what to think. The best movies captivate audiences because they’re artistically excellent. And the best movies provoke audiences to wrestle with ideas rather than be bludgeoned with arguments.

As a reminder, don’t take my commendations as wholesale endorsements of the content. Just because I loved a film doesn’t mean I loved everything in it, and a “best” movie doesn’t mean an appropriate movie for all audiences. Though the films highlighted below are all in some way edifying—depicting goodness, truth, or beauty in ways Christian viewers can celebrate—a few are rated R and should especially be viewed with caution and discernment.

You might want to pay attention to material, and audios from one of the TGC founders, DA Carson. I like him so much that I purchased a set of 250 audio lectures playable on my Logos Bible software.

R.C. Sproul once introduced Carson as the world’s premier authority on the New Testament.

To each his own, I suppose.

I did not like The Dark Knight Rises. Too many plot holes, the absence of any mention of the Joker, and showing Bane to be nothing but a stooge killed it for me.

Like I said, to each his own.

“Love, love, love “All Creatures Great & Small.””

if you had read the books, you’d hate it ... the TV series is basically a soap opera, and half the characters and most of the TV events weren’t even in the books ... and the characters in the TV series are nothing like the ones in the books ...

the books are some of the best stories ever written about rural England since Thomas Hardy ... the books explore the people and the countryside of the pre-WWII era, their lifestyles and their prejudices and ignorance, and the efforts of the educated veterinarians to try to gently educate them in modern husbandry and animal medicine ... pretty much everyone who loves the books thinks the TV series is a travesty ...

Dark knight. Not dark knight rises, as I reported

I did not like rides. Can’t watch bane. No.

I was on the USS Independence (CV 62) from 82 to 84. Was a Radioman, and our workspace and berthing was all the way forward on the O-3 level. Right below catapults 1 and 2. My first few days on there I wondered how I would ever get to sleep. By the end of the month, everyone is sleeping through all the take offs. Everytime the catapults would slam a aircraft out, dust would fall from the overhead.

The anchor room was about two decks down. I always thought lowering the anchors made a hell of lot more noise than the catapults.

I still remember my first time walking through the hanger bay when a plane landed. It sounded as if something was trying to tear through the deck.

...They made a big fuss over “Everything, Everywhere All at Once

I am a sucker for movies that take an impossible idea and shows what happens if it were possible. In this case it was jumping around between alternative universes. The movie was very creative and funny at times but it had a huge gay poison pill added. It annoys me to no end that Hollyweird packs their slime into an otherwise entertaining movie.

“... Blue Bloods with one of the top 3 tv characters of all time- Jennifer Esposito as Det. Jackie Curatolo ...”

Dittoes for the most part - Jennifer is definitely easy on the eyes but top 3?

If you like Tom Selleck, check out his made for TV series where he plays Jesse Stone. A little darker than his usual stuff but very, very good.

"Muscle Shoals" documentary about the Alabama recording studio that was pivotal in the nationwide rise of R&B and southern rock.

Yes, I know it came out in 2013, but I only just saw it over the holidays.

Of the movies he mentioned I have only seen Top gun Maverick.
Fun to watch movie, what movies should be entertaining.
Of his honorable mentions I’ve seen:
Aftersun; I felt like I was watching someone else’s hour and three quarter home movie.
All Quiet on the Western Front; Long but very good on the realities of war.
The Banshees of Inisherin; Surprisingly good considering the simple plot.
Triangle of Sadness; Entertaining but a bit too long.

That was a good documentary. Didn’t know about the place before watching it.

The one about Sound City wasn’t bad either.

I haven’t seen a new movie in quite some time. I don’t go to theaters and I won’t subscribe to ten Amazon channels just to see new movie every year or two. Maverick was available in in-flight entertainment, so I did see that. It was mediocre.

You watched Maverick on a tiny screen with the tinny little speakers? Puhleeze!

Dang thing is a magnificent tribute to naval aviators, flight movies, and one of the best buddy flicks ever! On the big screen with full theater sound is how my son and I watched it and you can feel the G-forces in those turns..

You, Sir, are a Philistine.

The plane was shaking due to turbulence during the air combat scenes. Top that.

There’s also a good documentary about Motown’s “Funk Brothers”.

In that particular supporting role, yes
