Norman Mailer’s “The Naked and the Dead” was the first book in the English language I ever read.
For some reason I never read it but read most of the others and I think 7 or 8 books about him.
I really should read it. Won the Pulitzer Prize.
Due to censorship at the time, the publisher made him change the bad word said by soldiers frequently in WWII to “fug.”
Later Ed Sanders (poet and author of the bestselling The Family about the Manson murders) set up a satirical rock group the Fugs (similar of the Mothers of Invention). Mailer said “Some of my best friends are Fugs.” I still have a picture of me standing next to Ed Sanders at a Fugs concert in 1969.
