Ditto. Maybe restrict meat to hamburger and chicken, but cutting off all animal proteins other than eggs and milk seems a bridge too far, especially with all the grain-based foods on the list.
I am OK with banning things like soda and junk food.
I guess I am a little prickly about banning proteins or basic staples like flour, spices, etc.
I could understand banning things like certain cuts of meat or fish too. If I cannot afford things like steak or lobster except for special occasion then SNAP shouldn’t be able to purchase it ever.
Poverty comes with a lot of set backs, malnutrition should not have to be one of them.
Food Assistance without any food. What’s the point?
This is a bunch of REPUBLICANS doing it.
Looks like they want them fatter. Lots of carbs on the ok list.
Potatoes only as far as I am concerned!
I certainly understand disallowing canned vegetables.
Yea. If you ever work a food pantry or food assistance, one notices very quickly the items available/offered are all carb-heavy.
But they can buy all the Ding Dongs and Ho Hos they want.
Brilliant!
NO, did you read the list in post 2 ?
Nothing wrong with Brussel Sprouts, especially smothered in butter.
Iowa WIC approved food list
Obviously the list is meant to exclude any healthy fish and allowing only garbage fish like chunk tuna and pink salmon - they do list as prohibited another garbage salmon: chum.
They have to eat bland food as no spices or herbs are allowed; No whole milk except Chocolate; only the blandest of cheese permitted; The largest category of permitted foods is yogurt - 3 pages.
There is NO MEAT, NO FRESH VEGETABLES listed on this July 2022 sheet.
better off cutting out anything wi sugar in it...
List is mainly yogurts.
Good incentive to BECOME PRODUCTIVE ——> GET OFF WELFARE.
If they wanted to reform EBT, they should make the EBTers pay a portion of the tab, say half or a third price for each item. Maybe exempt some items like raw beans, oats, or rice.
Food pantries don’t take donations unless they are shelf-stable (room temperature storage).
So, no fresh or frozen vegetables, no meats, etc.
Hence the carb-heavy donations.
The SNAP and WIC programs should emphasize vegetables, beans, and meat over carbs, carbs, carbs.
Don’t we have computers these days? They can spend x on vegetables, y on meat, and z on beans, and only buy potatoes and rice in smaller quantities.
They need stuff like butter and a small amount of herbs to cook with, which would save in the long run.
Typical gov move.
Cut expenses of the program without reducing the budget for it.
More money for them and their lavish government benefits.
Taxpaying saps will fall for it because it’s good for the planet.
Canned vegetables is actually one I don’t understand. They are nutrionally adequate, don’t require refrigeration, simple to prepare, or if need be, can be eaten strait from the can. To eat healthier I have actually been bringing/storing can vegetables at work for my lunches.
