True today, actually. Parties in DC, the Hamptons or yachts on the East Coast allow adult beverages.

This was true thru history.
Hence the Egyptian thing mentioned above, etc.
Cooked and controlled fermented drink was better. They just didn’t realize all you had to do was cook the water.

Sounds like urban legend to hide the fact that they were drunks. Boiling water for two minutes (yes 120 seconds) and allowing it to cool kills all waterborne pathogens. Backpackers know this.
