Sounds like urban legend to hide the fact that they were drunks. Boiling water for two minutes (yes 120 seconds) and allowing it to cool kills all waterborne pathogens. Backpackers know this.

I do not believe it was urban legend...think how surgeries were done...and bleeding people for health...in the 1700s_1800s

People didn’t realize that then.

I have never gotten the impression Founders were drunks. As a huge fan of the era, I would say that’s a pretty strong impression.

I do however feel we have an alcoholic society, obsessed with drink now.

It is not the cooling that kills the pathogens, it is the heat.
