Eater Austin ^ | 5/10/22 | Nadia Chaudhury and Erin Russell

Barbecue is a way of life in Texas, there’s just no way around it. The nationally recognized smoked meat scene found in the Austin area is so important that pitmaster Aaron Franklin even won a James Beard Award and pitmaster Damien Brockway is a semifinalist in this year’s awards.

Here is Eater’s updated definitive guide to the finest barbecue in Austin, including places with and without lines, outdoor picnic table seating and indoor table service, restaurants and food trucks, and all the briskets, ribs, and sausages a person could ever want. This means Franklin Barbecue, La Barbecue, Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ, the Austin outpost of Black's Barbecue, newcomer Distant Relatives, and many others. Brisket is naturally recommended at all of the restaurants and trucks below.

I can't understand the hypocrisy.

These Austin/Travis county liberals are demanding we all eat bugs for protein, but they still love their BBQ cows and hogs.

Animal farts be damned

They missed the BEST ONE, Salt Lick. Probably because they don’t do Payola.

I went on a business trip once to visit Lockheed in Austin. I think I ate breakfast at the hotel and Lockheed provided us with sandwiches for lunch, so I had my whole day’s per diem to spend on dinner. So, I asked about a good place to get steak and my Lockheed colleagues suggested a place slightly out of town to the south (can’t remember the name). It was awful. :(

The South’s Berkeley?

No self respecting resident would call themselves southern. They’re Texans!

I know Austin does suck, it's filled with crazed liberals, but yet they love their BBQ.

Bunch of hypocrites.

Yeah, but Salt Lick isn’t in Austin.

Not the main one.

Best Texas barbecue is outside Austin, but I’m sure Austin has fine ones.

Even average Texas bbq is great compared to most other.

Blacks in Lockhart may be the best. And I think they have a branch in Austin.

Lockhart has some pretty good que joints.
Blacks, Kruetz, Chisolms and Smittys all in a little town.
And the Courthouse is a beautiful building also.

Still a lot of meat-eating conservatives in Austin. Just not enough to turn it around. The “meat-eating” liberals in Austin tossed out Steven Adler (whose tenure saw a repeal and reinstitution of the “camping ban”) in favor of the not-as-bad Demonrat Kirk Watson. You’re right about the hypocrisy. After eating meat, Austin liberals still want their full-contact University of Texas football and Christmas lights.

Franklin’s I find overrated. (Bronco went there once so his followers dutifully line up.) Lockhart, TX is the go-to for central Texans as there are no less than four different and superlative places: Kreuz’s, Black’s, Smittie’s, and Chisolm Trail. Down the road a pace is another worthy mention: Luling Market. JMHO.

Pretty much what I say every time one of these threads come up.
Local’s tend to eat at Chisholm Trail. Good barbeque and better sides.

A “new” Blacks (I guess they same family) opened up on the north end of Lockhart a few month back, tried it once not bad.

It’s so easy to make your own amazing bbq.
Drop pork shoulder into crock pot, and a few things and enjoy in 8 hours. Takes only a few minutes.

I feel sorry for people that always have to do restaurants

Perhaps, but there’s joy in the line. 😉

Had the good fortune to enjoy a dinner at Salt Lick. Quiet night in the restaurant. Then in strode Don King with his little entourage. A memorable evening.
