PHILADELPHIA -- Jerry Blavat, the legendary disc jockey known as "The Geator with the Heater" and "The Boss with the Hot Sauce" has died, Action News has learned. He was 82.
......Born in South Philadelphia to a Jewish father and Italian mother, music ran through his veins from childhood. "The Geator" was widely known as one of the early rock-and-roll DJs who revolutionized the profession and developed the "oldies" format.
82. That’s about as far as things go.
RIP
It states he had alleged mafia ties.
Philly would be better with Rizzo, the mafia, and cops serving wooden shampoos…
So since David Crosby died can we count this as #2?.........and there’s always 3.
That was back when the mafia kept order in Philadelphia and it was safe. Now the woke mob let’s the feral punks and hood rats run without regard to manners.
Even Mayor Goode dropped a bomb on dirtbags.
I don’t go into Philly anymore. My last time in, black males riding dirt bikes and quads were harassing people. This is one block from Independence Hall.
I heard the mafia guys own all the mushroom houses out by Kennett Square now.
Irvine Homer, Wee-Willie Webber, Jim O’Brian, Jay Lloyd’s, Jessica Savitch, Gene London.
I had no idea he was half Italian. He has some Jewish relatives around the Baltimore area.
I once had the dubious fortune of doing a small bit of business with him involving a record album he was producing. He had the Napoleon complex—very short—and made obnoxious sexual comments to the young women in our shop.
Nevertheless, a legend in the old time South Philadelphia rock’n’roll scene, so RIP.
Had that happen recently in an upscale area of downtown DC. Kept the hotel guests up until 2 AM with roaring around a wide intersection.
It’s ridiculous. Some people aren’t meant for free societies.
I had him as a guest on Drexel’s WKDU in 1971.
His bouncers threw me out of his nightclub in Margate, NJ ... I deserved it LOL ...
we used to have organized crime ... now we have disorganized crime ...
I prefer organized crime.
I once had the dubious fortune of doing a small bit of business with him
Had no idea...!
Put together a multi-hour playlist for the lovely Mrs Prov1322 for our summer road trip last year that involved alot of Hy Lit, Joe Niagara, et al WIBG/WFIL DJ voice overs and song intros but no Blavat. Found out that Hy Lit was extremely jealous of Blavat even though Hy was far more popular.
Ego.
I’m like Forrest Gump. Somehow, I run into or past so many well-known people, but remain just as dumb as when I started.
He was not singing on the album; just producing it.
I remember Hy Litskyarooney!
Joe Niagra (Joe Nigra) was moved to morning drive from afternoon drive. Drew fired Hy Lit and replaced him with his protege, Bill Gardner. I worked with Gardner at KING in Seattle 50 years ago and got the story from him. Bill felt terrible about replacing Hy, and he hid in the men's room while Drew escorted Hy out of the building.
In 1970 Storer sold WIBG to Fairbanks, who brought in Jackson Reynolds to replace Drew. WIBG's ratings collapsed again. Ed Richards (Wendell Wright) replaced Reynolds and brought WIBG's ratings almost up to WFIL's with some edgy programming, but Fairbanks sold to another buyer, and things collapsed again with a Paul Drew protege running things into the ground.
Joe Niagra replaced Don Rose at WFIL temporarily while Rose recovered from open heart surgery. Joe later ended up at WPEN for a while.
Blavat worked at a number of lesser stations in Philly, but what he had was more of a cult following. Hy had no reason to be jealous of Blavat.
We lost Hy a number of years back from Parkinson's Disease.
Interesting history — thanks. Wibbage!
I also did have an occasion to meet Michael Tearson at WXPN. He was young and starting out, with long hippy hair. The nosepiece between the eyes of his glasses had broken, and he had rolled scotch tape around and around the break to hold it together. LOL
