I used to think like that too. But now, I think open carry can be more educational and if more of us carried openly, the irrational fears stoked by the anti’s could be mitigated when Karen’s see guns on law abiding citizens hips every where they look.

In my state, we’re nearing 1 million CCW’s. That means 1 in 7 could be armed today. An armed society is a polite society.

I’m in Illinois, open carry is not legal here, except on one’s own property.
Even if it was legal, I would probably carry concealed. Why advertise, and put a target on my back for a bad guy to see and possibly try to take my weapon.
I would rather surprise HIM if there was a confrontation.

A retention holster would help to prevent him from taking your weapon. There are 4 levels of retention holsters:

Normally LEOs carry with a Level 4 (Definition A) retention holster.

Why would you need a “permit” to open carry?

ANY permit or registration requirement is a clear infringement upon the second amendment.
