DAVID CROSBY, DEAD AT 81
TMZ.com ^ | 1/19/2022 | TMZ

Posted on 01/19/2023 2:29:38 PM PST by chuck allen

David Crosby, the singer, songwriter and guitarist and member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, has died.

His wife, Jan Dance, told Variety Thursday, "It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us."

She continues, "His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”

Born in Los Angeles, David founded the band The Byrds in 1964, finding their first number one hit ... only a year later thanks to a cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man."

It was in 1968 when Crosby formed Crosby, Stills & Nash with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. The group won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1969.

Over the years, members of the group were able to collab with other artists freely -- and did so with the likes of Neil Young at Woodstock.

Crosby was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as both a member of The Byrds and for his efforts with Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Yes. I meant ‘Suite Judy Blue Eyes’ the topic of the post I was replying to, was written for Judy Collins.

I love Fairport Convention.

I think it would be more accurate to say Crosby was a founding member of the Byrds. And before the Byrds, there was The Beefeaters (McGuinn, Clark, and Crosby).

My regret was that the Byrds appear never to have recorded "Mr. Tambouring Man" in its complete form. Dylan's incredible poetry and the Byrds' great vocals, it was a perfect combination, but sadly in complete form, it was too long for a single, and the best lines were left out.

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Anyway, I will grudgingly give Crosby a pass on his political views, and hope he has found peace.

I was there, and it was . . . and it wasn't.

IMO . . .

The planet experienced mass hysteria in that;

We all wore the same clothes (blue denim), smoked the same dope, spoke the same words and no matter what nation; France, England, Germany, USA, Japan, even Russia, the common thread/bond was US involvement in Viet Nam.

It was a wonderful time of fun, drugs, sex and an awakening political sense.

Well . . . . I dug it, anyway.

I would upvote or like you comment but FR languishes in the 20th century.

When it comes to music, this current century has hardly produced anything that's listenable.

Dylan on Crosby:

“Crosby was a colorful and unpredictable character, wore a Mandrake the Magician cape, didn’t get along with too many people and had a beautiful voice — an architect of harmony. He could freak out a whole city block all by himself. I liked him a lot.”

“My Back Pages” - my favorite Byrds song although their studio version cut many of the verses...like they did to Mr Tambourine Man

“My Back Pages” - LIVE complete song led by Roger/Jim McGuinn with help from Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, George Harrison...and Dylan

RE: Bars against getting into heaven....

The one that worries me is Mother Angelica’s “You can’t get into heaven if you still hate someone.”

I am in deep trouble if she was right.

Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation PCPA (born Rita Antoinette Rizzo; April 20, 1923 – March 27, 2016), also known as Mother Angelica, was an American Roman Catholic nun of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration.

I’ll give credit to obnoxious people as long as they contribute something good to the world. Love Crosby, Stills and Nash! Hope he went peacefully.

Total opposite of him politically but loved the Byrds and then CSN a lot. So did my late wife.

No one in music or the other arts is perfect.

Someone said Frank Sinatra could have been a stay at home ideal family man or give the world his music and not be one. Not both.

Someone said the singer and actor Harry Connick,Jr. (some say closest to Sinatra’s modern day singing) found his version of Sinatra’s Ava Gardner by marrying his beloved Jill Goodacre (famous for her beauty as a model) and they’ve been happily married since 1994 and have three children. But he never put his all into singing and touring. So sort of faded in that regard.

Good for Crosby. Now he doesn’t have to hear anything more that Donald Trump has to say.

Not so sure on that one. Christ died to wash away our sins. All our sins. The thief on the cross was with Him in Paradise.

Yes, My Back Pages, a great song, another one that was with me in my squandered youth, along with 5D which I also still love.

But I couldn’t make it through the live version once Neil Young started to sing, he was the worst thing to happen to CS&N.
