If he was walking with his dogs, then the hunter must have shot pretty near the owner.
I own a Great Pyrenees dog. GREAT defender. One killed 8 coyotes recently.
A friend of my family did this, except it was the family cat, and he mistook it for a rabbit.
It is hunting season for deer until today. I feel bad for the dog but the owner should have stayed the F out of the woods during the season.
My maltipoo is safe from this guy. But we live in the woods and occasionally can hear coyotes howling within a couple hundred yards of our house. Whenever we let him out we always talk loudly so that any coyotes leave the area. And last night they sounded so close we actually used a leash anyway.
But yeah, that dog looks an awfully lot like a Coyote, especially if making a split decision. Sad for both parties. At least no humans died.
Missing data.
Was it his property?
Did he know people hunt that property?
Dog off the leash?
If that dog was off-leash and I was out hunting coyote, I would think that that animal was a coyote, too.
Sad outcome. Owner is probably kicking himself...
I'm reminded of that Rambo yahoo who last year killed the lady out walking her dogs on her own property. Or the yahoo who killed the lady hanging wash on her clothes line.
Some people should not be out hunting at all, ever, period.
my sister has hunters come on to her property all the time, she has to tell them to get away.
She’s 85-she’s not running around in her woods. they get awfully close to her house, and i can’t tell ya what she would do if they shot her dog.
“Oh, my bad”
People also need to respect boundaries.
Was the dog on a leash? It does loke a lot like a coyote.
When I visit my sister in the North Woods of Maine, the dogs ALWAYS wear Blaze. Lots of it.
Walking your dog (that looks like a coyote) IN THE WOODS during deer season?
Stupid is as stupid does.
Walking in the woods during deer/hunting season?
Stupid is as stupid does.
Was this guy (and/or his dog) wearing a “shoot me” sign?
After years of nagging, the wife was finally going deer hunting with her husband. “I’ll drop you off here and go park the car. Don’t get into trouble”. says her husband.
He drove the car down the road and parked it. Walking back he could hear a heated argument between his wife and some man.
“It’s my deer. I shot it!” he could hear his wife shouting.
The man’s voice kept insisting... “That’s not your deer, lady!”
The husband started walking faster. His wife said “It is TOO my deer. I shot it and it’s mine.”
“No it’s not” said the man.
The argument got louder and louder with his wife shouting about her killing her first deer.
Finally, the weary voice of the man was heard admitting defeat.
“Okay, lady, it’s YOUR deer. Just let me get my saddle off him!”
Bought my mother-in-law a beautiful, full-length coyote fur coat a few years back.
Always encourage her to take long walks in the woods (during Hunting Season).
So far, no luck!
Regards,
Hunter shot at something he couldn’t identify and said: Oops my bad.
That said, taking a sizable canine in the woods during hunting season is a terrible idea, as this person found out.
I could see mistaking it for a wolf, but that is way to big for a coyote.
Did the hunter collect a bounty? Askin’ for a friend...
“said the hunter won’t face any charges or disciplinary measures”
Well, none from the worthless government.

From the article:
“The shooting happened on January 7 when Chris Heller was taking Hunter and the family’s other dog, Freya, out at a ‘very commonly used walking path’ by their home.
Jennifer said in a Facebook post Chris found no cars at the entrance to the trail but the man kept the dogs close by anyway.
At some point, Chris found a group of hunters and conversed with them about how he thought hunting season was over. The group told them it had been extended.
Chris let the hunters know he and his dogs, who were off-leash, would be walking through the woods and told them he would be out of the way in several minutes.
The hunters communicated to the others in the party that there would be a man and two large dogs in the area, according to Jennifer’s post.
Before they could walk away, one of the hunters shot the dog while he was just feet away.
The malamute mix was shot ‘in the gut’ by a hunter with a scope on his rifle.”
