Pennsylvania family's dog shot by hunter who mistook it for a coyote

Chris Heller was walking his two dogs in the woods near his house on Jan. 7 when his 8-year-old malamute mix Hunter was shot by a deer hunter, his wife Jennifer Heller said in an online post.

Chris Heller rushed to get the pup to an emergency vet but he didn’t make the trip. Hunter died on the way, she said.

“Hunter was an incredibly sweet and intelligent dog — gentle with the Hellers’ young grandchildren, immediate best buddies with the other animals in the home, and a loving companion who would do anything for a good piece of cheese,” Jennifer Heller wrote.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission, however, said the hunter won’t face any charges or disciplinary measures because he made a mistake, thinking the beloved family pet was a coyote, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Was the dog on a leash? It does loke a lot like a coyote.

When I visit my sister in the North Woods of Maine, the dogs ALWAYS wear Blaze. Lots of it.

own a Great Pyrenees dog. GREAT defender. One killed 8 coyotes recently.

Amazing. Coyotes usually win those fights.

Walking your dog (that looks like a coyote) IN THE WOODS during deer season?

Stupid is as stupid does.

Walking in the woods during deer/hunting season?

Stupid is as stupid does.

Was this guy (and/or his dog) wearing a “shoot me” sign?

After years of nagging, the wife was finally going deer hunting with her husband. “I’ll drop you off here and go park the car. Don’t get into trouble”. says her husband.

He drove the car down the road and parked it. Walking back he could hear a heated argument between his wife and some man.

“It’s my deer. I shot it!” he could hear his wife shouting.

The man’s voice kept insisting... “That’s not your deer, lady!”

The husband started walking faster. His wife said “It is TOO my deer. I shot it and it’s mine.”

“No it’s not” said the man.

The argument got louder and louder with his wife shouting about her killing her first deer.

Finally, the weary voice of the man was heard admitting defeat.

“Okay, lady, it’s YOUR deer. Just let me get my saddle off him!”

“You can buy a blaze orange vest for your four legged friends”

I always put an orange vest on my dog when hiking, so we can be spotted/found if needed.

During hunting season, I just stay out the woods where hunting is allowed. Too many idiots out there hunting.

Pennsylvania family's dog shot by hunter who mistook it for a coyote

Bought my mother-in-law a beautiful, full-length coyote fur coat a few years back.

Always encourage her to take long walks in the woods (during Hunting Season).

So far, no luck!

Regards,

The Pyrenees is a big powerful dog. They were bred to guard other animals I beleive. One on one I think I’d give the advantage to the Pyrenees.

Illegal in many States, during gamebird nesting seasons. Ill-advised in many places during a hunting season. In many States, coyote “season” is year-round.

I stay out of the forest during hunting season here. Even wearing "hunter's orange" isn't safe.

That said, taking a sizable canine in the woods during hunting season is a terrible idea, as this person found out.

I could see mistaking it for a wolf, but that is way to big for a coyote.

It may be illegal but hardl anyone obeys the law, even right in town. I’m not even sure there is a dog warden around us- we are a small town- in the west, dogs roam the streets in packs during the day. Was a,ways worried for my friends kids who had to walk to school every morning. There was a dog though that befriended the kids and would protect them from the other not so friendly dogs that came by to investigate. Sadly that dog died though. the kids are being homeschooled now, so,they are put of danger mostly, but they do still play outdoors. they live in a town where people drive atv’s on the roads- seems there isn’t much law out In That town
