1- Pentagon impressed by AFU’s ingenuity in using Western weapons - CNN

15.01.23 20:16

Ukrainian ingenuity in using Western weapons on the battlefield impresses U.S. officials, and they are studying Ukraine’s example of how they can be used in modern warfare.
Ukrainian ingenuity impressed American officials, who praised Kyiv’s ability to find “MacGyver-like” solutions to their needs on the battlefield that fill important tactical gaps, that more sophisticated Western weapons have, the authors of the publication note (MacGyver is a secret agent, the hero of a popular TV series).

“Their innovation is just incredibly impressive,” said Seth Jones, Director of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. For the US military, the war in Ukraine has become a unique source of data on the effectiveness of their own weapons systems. It is noted that last fall, when Ukraine liberated significant territories during counterattacks, it struck at Russian troops with artillery and missiles of American production.
The artillery was often guided by a self-made system that Ukraine developed on the battlefield. Ukrainian-made software has turned tablets and smartphones into sophisticated guidance tools that are now widely used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A mobile app has been created that feeds satellite and other intelligence imagery into a real-time guidance algorithm that allows units on the front lines to direct fire at specific targets.

U.S. officials familiar with the tool say it has proven very effective in combat. The guidance app is one of dozens of examples of battlefield innovations that Ukraine has developed over nearly a year of war, often finding cheap solutions to expensive problems. For example, small plastic drones drop grenades and other ammunition on Russian troops. 3D printers make spare parts to repair heavy equipment in the field. Ordinary pickup trucks have turned into mobile rocket launchers. Sophisticated American missiles are arming old Soviet fighters.

The way Ukraine used its limited stockpile of HIMARS missiles to wreak havoc on Russian commanders by striking command posts, headquarters and depots is impressive, the Pentagon official said, adding that military leaders will study the experience for years to come. Russian Battalion Only Has 10 Tanks and 30 Soldiers Left: Ukraine
By Ellie Cook
1/15/23 at 10:30 AM EST
https://www.newsweek.com/russia-battalion-tanks-ukraine-kharkiv-oblast-general-staff-1773875

One of the battalions making up an “elite” Russian tank regiment waging war in Ukraine has just 10 tanks left, operated by 30 soldiers, according to Ukraine’s armed forces.

The battalion of Russia’s 26th Tank Regiment, which is fighting around the city of Kupiansk, in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine, had 10 T-80BV main battle tanks still in “serviceable condition” as of Thursday, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine posted on Facebook on Sunday.

The rest are “destroyed or disabled,” according to the General Staff, with those still in operation manned by around 30 Russian personnel.

A Russian tank battalion typically consists of approximately 40 main battle tanks, according to current affairs magazine The Diplomat. Each of the Russian tank regiments has around 93 tanks in three battalions, according to Insider.

In its latest combat losses report on Sunday, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces had destroyed 3,106 Russian tanks and killed more than 115,000 Russian personnel since the invasion began last February, although Russia has not released casualty numbers recently.

The Russian Defense Ministry has been contacted for comment.

In the early days of the war, the Ukraine military claimed there were morale problems in this Russian tank unit, with Ukraine’s General Staff posting on Facebook in March last year that soldiers in the 26th Tank Regiment of the 47th Tank Division were asking to end their contracts to fight in Ukraine.

Defense and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke told Newsweek on Sunday that the Ukrainian claim in Sunday’s Facebook post was “plausible,” given the “significant casualties” that the 26th Tank Regiment is thought to have suffered early in the war in March.

The 26th Tank Regiment is part of the 47th Guards Tank Division, which is a crucial point, according to Clarke, given the “elite” status conferred by the title of “Guards.” It is typically awarded by the Kremlin for distinguished service, while the fact that the regiment is equipped with T-80 tanks rather than standard T-72s shows the unit’s importance, Clarke stressed.

However, he suggested the idea that Russian personnel in the battalion has been cut to 30 “is probably a red herring.” The T-80 tank is operated by a three-man crew, he explained, “so if they are down to 10 serviceable tanks and therefore 10 crews, that is right.”

The bigger question was how many personnel remain tasked with repairing and maintaining the tanks, since if there aren’t enough people doing these jobs, then “operational tanks just become steadily more unserviceable, whether or not they get hit by enemy fire,” he added.

Even in the Soviet era, Ukraine was known for scientific, engineering, and industrial talent. Under the brutal exigencies of Russian invasion, these are now harnessed to national survival. The Ukrainians prefer Western weapons and equipment that permit innovation and adaptation to local needs, and they have proven to be quite good at it. For the US and NATO, valuable lessons are being gained as to how well their weapons and tactics perform in combat against a near peer adversary. Whatever else can be said about the war in Ukraine, it is a valuable beta test of sorts for Western weapons, materiel, and tactics.

Former Russian Commander Warns of ‘Civil War’ That Will ‘Kill’ Russia
By Fatma Khaled On 1/15/23 at 1:48 PM EST
https://www.newsweek.com/former-russian-commander-warns-civil-war-that-will-kill-russia-1773906

Former Russian commander Igor Ivanovich Strelkov, also known as Igor Girkin, recently warned of “civil war” in Russia that could result in “millions of casualties” as the country continues to fight in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“There are all kinds of civil wars. There are civil wars that will kill our country in three days in winter. And it will be over in three days, but it will kill the country,” Girkin said in a clip with subtitles that was posted to Twitter on Sunday by Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

VIDEO CLIP
https://twitter.com/i/status/1614590972666470401

In the clip, Girkin added that Moscow could “collapse into a civil war with millions of casualties, with a complete collapse and defragmentation.”

Russia continues to fight in Ukraine despite struggles in obtaining military equipment, shortage in manpower, poor morale among troops, and what some predicted an internal division within military leaders.

On Saturday, Russian forces launched a missile strike that hit a building in an apartment complex in Dnipro, killing 29 people and injuring dozens of others, according to Valentyn Reznichenko, the region’s governor.

Though Russian forces made some advances in capturing the Ukrainian city of Soledar, Ukrainian army leaders still have control over the situation in the western outskirts of the city, which is north of Bakhmut, Girkin said Wednesday on Telegram.

Meanwhile, warnings about a civil war breaking out in Moscow have been previously made by some of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s critics.

Mark Feygin, a former deputy in the State Duma and human rights lawyer, told Newsweek last October that a comprehensive defeat for Putin in Ukraine could result in a “bloody” civil war with a range of factions and regions seeking power.

Former Russian Commander Warns of ‘Civil War’
Russian President Vladimir Putin is seen in Moscow on January 3. Former Russian commander Igor Ivanovich Strelkov, also known as Igor Girkin, recently warned of “civil war” in Russia that could result in “millions of casualties” as the country continues to fight in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“What will be depends greatly on the way this war will conclude,” Feygin said, adding that Ukraine could “crash” Putin’s government without even taking back Crimea if Kyiv’s troops are able to fully liberate the Kherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk oblasts.

“The easiest would be if elites inside Russia will make up their mind and choose a replacement for Putin, a replacement who could negotiate with the West, could provide some initial framework for concluding the logistics of that war, and then also work towards future elections,” Feygin said.

This past November, some leaked emails from a whistleblower at Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) that were shared with Newsweek revealed how a possible civil war could break out among Putin’s closest allies.

The agent, dubbed the Wind of Change, writes regular dispatches to Russian dissident exile Vladimir Osechkin, expressing the frustration and discontent inside the FSB over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The emails detail inner turmoil and conflict within Moscow, predicting an “inevitable” civil war, and that the country will soon “descend into the abyss of terror” as people grow increasingly tired of the war.

Newsweek reached out to the Russia foreign affairs ministry for comment.
