Pfizer's bivalent Covid booster could increase the risk of a stroke in recipients over age 65, officials report.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials cited vaccine safety database data that showed an increased risk of ischemic stroke in the elderly within three weeks of getting the shot.
An ischemic stroke, also known as brain ischemia, is caused by blockages in arteries that carry blood to the brain.
The safety concern requires more investigation and 'the totality of the data currently suggests that it is very unlikely that the signal … represents a true clinical risk', CDC wrote in a statement.
Officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told the Washington Post that there may not be reason for alarm - and the noticed uptick could be a statistical anomaly.
The CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink detect the uptick, with officials saying it met thresholds needed to spur further investigation.
'We believe it is important to share this information with the public, as we have in the past, when one of our safety monitoring systems detects a signal,' the agency wrote.
Vaccine adverse effect trackers from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Department of Veterans Affairs did not show an elevated risk.
Pfizer and BioNTech said in a statement that they have been made aware of limited reports of ischemic strokes in people 65 and older following vaccination with their updated shot.
'Neither Pfizer and BioNTech nor the CDC or the FDA have observed similar findings across numerous other monitoring systems in the US,' Pfizer added.
'Globally and there is no evidence to conclude that ischemic stroke is associated with the use of the companies' COVID-19 vaccines.'
This safety concern has not been identified with Moderna's bivalent shot. Both vaccines were authorized in late-August by the FDA.

When the CDC doesn't even monitor it's own VAERS website to see if there are any adverse effects (and they have admitted that they don't monitor their own website),
I am sure the FDA, who had to re-write the definition of "vaccine" in order to qualify the covid-19 jab for emergency usage,
will be as equally vigilant, as the CDC in identifying strokes among the over 65 population who received the jab.
Sorry, but you both, the CDC and FDA, have had your trustworthiness card punched and cancelled.
