A North Carolina school district used COVID-19 relief funds to boost the salaries and benefits of its staff, according to a report.

Chalkboard, a K-12 public education news outlet, reported that Wake County Public School System used more than 40% of $442 million in COVID-19 relief funding to supply “bonus pay” to its employees.

The outlet goes on to say that “77.69% of spending to salaries and benefits, with about 10% or less was spent “on other categories.” The report explained further that the school district spent $238.2 million on salaries and benefits, approximately $30 million spent on supplies, $19 million for purchased services, $88,690 for capital outlay, and $9 million for “other” expenses. A breakdown of the state data shows Wake County Public School System shows that 64.5% of COVID-19 funds were used to fund “salary.” It also shows that 11.1% was used for “employee Benefits,” 10.1% for “purchased Services,” 11.2% for “supplies and “materials,” and 3.0% for “other.” …

I suspect they are not the only institution to do so. These tax-payer dollars were used to increase salaries and fund pet projects across the nation.

Many tax-payers were snookered into going along with such funding and celebrated the funds being funneled into their wallets and local economy. Many were complicit in the sleight of hand with the funding of projects in their locale and looked the other way as they saw the funds go into projects that had nothing to do with Covid. Greed is an awful sin!

A lot of money wasted for “COVID”. One school got that much money times all the school districts across the country! Wow

wasn’t this money supposed to go towards doing things like improving ventilation in classrooms and improving social distancing spaces, skype lessons and other programs for students, not teacher raises and perks?

“In general, the legal language governing ESSER and federal guidance give districts a lot of leeway when it comes to how the money can be used. Districts may use it for addressing the academic impacts of lost instructional time, education technology, mental health services, after-school programs, facilities upgrades to improve air quality in schools and prevent the transmission of COVID-19, and other uses for funds allowed in other federal laws, such as the Every Student Succeeds Act.”

Just an odd question....once Covid funding (federal level particularly) halts...then where do you make up the lost salary situation? I see these people very unhappy when you trim x-amount of their salary away.

Re #7. Taxes go up, naturally. That’s why I’m moving out of the state this year. Wake property taxes are run by the county without voter approval.

They raise local property taxes to make up the shortfall.
