There are many weather events there, including Vandenfog, that are pretty extreme.
The most intense lightning I ever saw was in a band of thunderstorms just over 101 at Buelton near Lompoc. I lived on Oklahoma for six years and I saw some doozies there. This one won, hands down. I counted 40 lightning strokes in a minute

I was 10 at the time, remember it well. I just looked it up and found this info.
Altogether, in January and February 1969, about 20-30 inches of precipitation fell in the lowlands and 50-60 inches in the mountains of Southern California, making 1969 the wettest year in recorded history up to that point.
