A female hiker on Mt. Baldy died after sliding an estimated 500-700 feet down Baldy Bowl’s steep, icy hillside Sunday, authorities announced.
Officials with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department received a call from the California Office of Emergency Services in reference to “an SOS message from a Garmin InReach device” stating that a hiker had just fallen down Baldy Bowl, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
A sheriff’s helicopter responded to the scene using coordinates from the woman’s device and was able to locate her on a steep hillside.
A medic was lowered down from the helicopter to evaluate the woman and requested an air rescue and transport to the hospital due to her “substantial injuries.”
An air rescue helicopter then responded to the scene, lowering an additional medic and gear.
After the weather cleared, the deceased hiker was transported to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
Her name is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

The snowflakes think mountains, wilderness and backcountry are safe amusement parks. In fact in San Bernardino Cty, they made people buy “Adventure passes” just to hike around the mountains/forest. No joke.
Oh man. Those wacky Cauliphonyans think the whole world is Disneyland. I’m going to have to dig out my coonskin cap.
Hiked in the Pocono Mountains. A beaver built a dam and flooded a few good acres, stymying our egress. Took us about 8 hours to find our way out. Thank God it was summertime or we may have been goners.
My time in Far East suburbs of LA/Orange counties was improved by the view of Mt Baldy.
Will pray for the girl, family and friends.
Left CA in 1992, Left Illinois in 2001, the gifts that keeps on giving.
A hikerette.
Wow! Pretty cool story. When you’re out in nature, anything can happen. You always better be prepared. Thanks for sharing.
Put a little ice on that ridge and it's a long slide down, as a few people have found out the hard way.
Like most modern women, she was apparently obsessed with collecting Likes for her social media.
