No offense but N’awlins is a urine soaked puke smelling, disgusting sewer posing as a city. Nope. Never again. Six times and six horrible experiences. I only went because they were company events where my job required I be there. From the 80’s to two years ago its still the same.
N.O. is on my list of places to NOT visit.
Had a local sportscaster here once that used to go cover the sugar bowl games if a team from the state went.
He said if you wanna get grossed out go to the bars on bourbon stret in the daytime when you can actually see how disgustingly nasty they really are.

My son and his wife live in the French Quarter. Once was enough for me. It is a dark place.
I went in the 80’s.

Your description is accurate….about perhaps a four block area. I went there for work every year for a while. But then when my wife and I go, we get out of the quarter and explored some other areas.
Some of the best meals I’ve eaten were in New Orleans.
But…you have to be careful where you find yourself when the sun sets.
I don’t blame you. New Orleans has really gone downhill since Katrina since the police have been decimated. It is generally not a safe place to visit especially if one is a tourist.
As one who used to live there I can say there are some great places to go that are off the beaten path but again you have to know where they are. I occasionally visit there now but not often.
The smell of the French Quarter really was a surprise. To me, it was a mix of molding wood and urine.
