The Cocoa Police Department said they responded to a residence at 2111 Otterbein Avenue on Jan. 1, in regards to a welfare check on 80-year-old Kathleen Ruhlander. The woman's granddaughter contacted police saying Robert Ruhlander, 53, the elderly woman's son, wouldn't let her see her grandmother. When another relative attempted to reach out Ruhlander told her the elderly woman was, "taking a nap."
Officers said multiple welfare checks were attempted that day, however Ruhlander wouldn't let the officers inside the residence, closing the front door behind him when he spoke to law enforcement.
A neighbor told police he believed that the woman was dead inside the home since he hadn't heard the "beeping" sounds from the woman's breathing apparatus in a week or two. The man also noted that the front door of the home was usually left open and it had been shut for quite some time.

In case anybody wonders what I think should happen to Mr. Ruhlander, well, it involves a well-built wooden structure with a trap door, and a length of rope with a loop in it.
I’m shocked they did a welfare check and caught him.

This stuff happens in every state. They’re jus trying to make Florida look like it’s full of crazy people to make the governor look bad in my opinion. If you want crazy look at California and New York, specifically NYC.
It has happened before. Once Tokyo was gonna celebrate all their 100+ residents only to find most were dead and the family engaged in pension fraud.
Something you may not know about the sunshine state.......it is absolutely FULL of refugees from other states.
Just because this guy lives in Florida doesn’t mean he’s FROM Florida.

Florida’s open sunshine laws also make it a lot easier to get these stories written and published.
And all the stories certainly didn’t turn me away from moving down here.
These events happens regularly. The adult children or child is dependent on the psrental retirement or social security check. When the parent passes on they make a choice and hope they pass away before it is discovered that Pa or Ma has already. Pair of sisters did this and since they lived in a remote area near here got away with it for decades until social security came calling as dad was approaching his centenary. Most of these people are weak or drunks rather than evil.

Chances are it’s drugs of one sort or another......and I include gambling under the drugs umbrella.
