Quick story- we have condo’s in Cocoa Beach, Florida. There was a nasty rip tide that pulled a girl out. Her father, who was really overweight, went out to save her but couldn’t get back in.

My 20YO nephew and another stranger went out and pulled them back in. The father almost immediately collapsed of a heart attack on the beach after being pulled in and died. It was a horrible scene.

Eventually one of the family members came up and thanked my nephew and the stranger, saying if they hadn’t gone out there the father and daughter would’ve drowned.

Muscle and bone sink. Fat floats. See: Whales, Dolphins, Seals, etc. And perhaps a genetic ancestry of European winters’ survival led to a couple extra layers of subcutaneous blubber in we of melanin poor complexion.

We grew up in FL. Everyone learned to swim. When I was in high School I once had to pull my kid sister’s friend out of a rip tide at Jax beach. It almost got the best of me. I’m thankful for all those swimming lessons and tips we received From my Dad on how to get out of a riptide.

There are other reasons blacks don't swim much. One is that swimming makes dark skin look ashy and requires tons of lotion every time you get out.

Without a father in a kid's life, a black mother doesn't want to be seen getting ashy and therefore the black kid doesn't go swimming. Even if a black kid has a father in his/her life, they might not go swimming simply because other blacks don't go swimming.

That's not the case with some young black men in church who as boys would sometimes spend the night at my house hanging out with my white sons. During the summer we'd every now and then go swimming (with their parents' permission) and we'd have a blast. As an adult today one of the young men credits those times as a reason he's Christian first, black second and wanting a wife who thinks the same.
