I think Hinduism recognizes One God in many manifestations.

It sort of depends on who you ask ... There were a lot of Indians in a prior line of work; I’ve heard both ideas from them.

India is a big place, and they were from all over ...

I’ve known some who will eat anything but beef, those who won’t eat beef or pork, and some who are totally vegetarian. I imagine there are those who will drink alcohol and those who won’t. Yes, it’s a big nation and ethnicity with a lot of history.

Well, it’s not just a Hindu thing. Early Christianity had the doctrine of ‘mortification of the flesh’, and came up with such inventions as hair shirts and self flagellation (they apparently had a number of brilliant tools to apply to the latter.)

I don’t think God required or approved of those, either. Human beings are just strange and often perverted, even when they think they’re being ‘holy’.
